    The nationally recognized School of Media & Communication at Western Kentucky University is accepting applications for appointment as a full-time, nine-month, tenure-eligible faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor of Journalism for our endowed Cal Turner Journalism Professorship. We seek a journalist who understands the importance of cross-platform storytelling and who is excited to work with our faculty, students and staff to fulfill the School of Media & Communication's mission of preparing students for careers in a changing media environment. Employment begins in August 2026.

     

    The successful candidate will be adept at storytelling with both traditional and cutting-edge technologies and have experience in reporting for print and/or digital platforms. The successful candidate will teach a variety of courses within the Journalism major such as Intro to News Writing, Intermediate Reporting, Advanced Reporting, Multiplatform News Presentation, Feature Writing; and core courses in the School of Media & Communication such as Understanding Media, Media Collaboration, and Media Diversity.

     

    The school's reputation for excellence and tradition of success continue to attract outstanding faculty and top students from throughout the nation. The Journalism major is a diverse degree with writing and editing at its core. Students also take foundational courses in visual news presentation and software applications. It develops students well-versed in technical, editorial and professional functions of traditional news reporting as well as its modern successors. The major produces an award-winning website that features work produced by students in the major's upper-division courses.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    + Teaching courses in Journalism and one or two of the school's core courses per year

    + Maintaining an active agenda of creative work, contributing to the field through publications, presentations or creative projects

    + Advising and mentoring students on academic and career-related issues

    + Participating in departmental activities, including student recruitment and community outreach

    + Contributing service to the school, college, university and discipline

    + Potentially serving as department coordinator for the journalism program eventually; managing the budget, workloads, and advising; developing the curriculum to reflect current industry trends and emerging technologies; scheduling classes, and facilitating internships

    Job Requirements:

    + Master's degree or PhD in an appropriate discipline

     

    Additional requirements for each rank are below.

    The ideal candidate for an Assistant Professor position should have:

    + Professional reporting or media experience

    + Potential for excellence in teaching

    The ideal candidate for an Associate Professor position should meet the aforementioned requirements, but also have:

    + A minimum of five years of college teaching experience

    + Achievement in research/creative activity

    + A history of university public service
