We are currently looking for a Sr. Principal Engineer- Mobility able to support our Combat Vehicle Product Lines. Here we value our workforce and their well-being. This position is currently working 3 days / week on-site and up to 2 days / week remotely on a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off out of our Sterling Heights, MI office.
As a Sr. Principal Mobility Engineer, you will act as a Mobility Subject Matter Expert (SME) supporting multiple vehicle programs in an oversight role to guide sound engineering and management practices and tools are consistently applied across BAE Systems Mobility Group. You will directly lead a small Mobility Engineering Team, consisted of suspension & powertrain engineers, through all project phases including initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control, and closing.
As a Sr. Principal Mobility Engineer, you will:
+ Oversee and ensure mobility engineering architectures and solutions are effectively implemented and tested onto platforms within minimal defects
+ Lead a Mobility Integrated Project Team (IPT) to derive requirements, develop concepts and mature a concept to final design following established Life Cycle Management processes while reporting progress via Earned Value Management System (EVMS). Lead design reviews both internally and with U.S. Government customer. Have ability to create concise and coherent technical summaries in MS Powerpoint or MS Word.
+ Provide Baseline of Estimates (BOEs). Create cost, schedule and technical proposals relating to powertrain and mobility solutions in response to U.S. Government Request for Information / Proposals (RFI/RFP).
+ Support long-term mobility product planning (roadmap)
+ Tutor junior mobility engineers in mobility best practices and provide how-to-do guidance in challenging problems. Document lessons learned and best practices for mobility system designs, and when appropriate, published these on BAE Systems shared engineering site for others to learn.
+ Coordinate with Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Team to perform mobility analysis that support design activities across multiple vehicle platforms. These may include Vehicle Dynamic Analysis of Automotive Performance, NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM) analysis, Obstacle Crossing analysis, Go / No Go analysis, FEA, Suspension Static and Dynamic Analysis. Coordinate collection and transfer of vendor and test data to M&S team to ensure models have most current and accurate input values and control logic.
+ Lead Components Source Selection activities to include: Creating component specifications, leading RFP solicitations from suppliers, evaluating responses and making recommendations via trade studies and lead test activities to validate performance.
+ Oversee and sign off on documentation of design and or component selection by the Mobility design team via CAD drawings, virtual models or via component specification documents inclusive of engineering change proposals when required.
+ Supervise a design team of up to 10 engineers while tracking individual performance and provide regular input to their performance reviews and make recommendations for their training or advancement.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
+ Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field and 8 years of experience.
+ Broad knowledge of suspension system & powertrain with in-depth knowledge in two or more of these areas: Track Suspension Systems and Components such as suspension dampers, Hydro-pneumatic suspension units (HSUs), road arms, ride height control, lock-out subsystems, steering systems, drive sprockets, track components, foundation brake system, brake application systems (both mechanical and electronic), Internal Combustion Engines, Automotive Transmissions, Gearbox Design, Automotive Cooling Systems, Air Filtration and Exhaust Systems, Electric or Hybrid Electric Drive Systems, AutomotivePerformance Analysis, and Vehicle Dynamics.
+ Program experience in developing and managing Contract Work Breakdown Structure (CWBS), statement of work (SOW), budget and schedules. Demonstrated coaching skills.
+ Working knowledge of relevant military and commercial design and drawing standards.
+ Sound interpersonal skills involving interfacing, coordinating and negotiating with company personnel, customers and suppliers.
+ Highly self-motivated with strong analytical and creative problem-solving abilities.
+ Ability to identify, define, interpret, and resolve engineering problems involving conflicting design/contractual/policy or technical requirements across functional areas.
+ Experienced in project scheduling, planning, execution, and reporting within assigned budget.
+ Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
+ Fluent in MS Office tools including Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint, MS Project and Sharepoint running in a MS 365 environment.
+ Familiarity with capabilities and limitations of higher level tools such as CFD analysis, FEA analysis, KULI, AMESIM, DADS, Ansys, Siemens/Simcenter3D, Siemens/Hyperview, LSDyna when applied to mobility systems.
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
+ Experience in design and development of suspension or powertrain system from concept through production.
+ Experience providing mobility solutions for heavy duty off-road or military vehicles and tracked vehicle design
+ Experience providing mobility analysis & solutions for amphibious military vehicles
+ Familiarity with BAE Systems business processes or military vehicle experience.
+ Experience conducting Life Cycle Management (LCM) reviews as an Assessor or Chairperson.
Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $130355 - $221603
Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
