Driver Lead Class A CDL or Scholastic Book Fairs
We are currently in search of a CDL A Delivery Driver Lead to help our Area Distribution Supervisor with the daily responsibilities of guiding our local team. Scholastic drivers are home every weekend and the majority of weeknights. In certain markets, drivers can expect one to two overnight routes per week during peak periods. In the event that they do take an overnight route, drivers are provided with a choice of hotel accommodations and a $50 meal allowance.

To support safe driving practices, Scholastic utilizes on-board truck cameras in our commercial vehicles. The camera system provides feedback on vehicle and operating conditions in real time and records data for training purposes. Scholastic drivers are provided with training on this equipment and asked to provide consent to be recorded.
What you will do:
+ Monitor performance of all drivers to ensure that maximum productivity and performance levels are maintained and are within budgetary guidelines.
+ Work with the Warehouse Supervisor (WS) /Branch Manager (BM) to coordinate dispatching of all CDL drivers to accomplish scheduled deliveries/pick-ups/re-orders.
+ Communicate with Regional/National Transportation Specialists (RTS/NTS) to resolve schedule changes. Coordinate changes within the branch to ensure all changed pick-ups and deliveries occur.
+ Ability to forward plan for peak needs. a) Utilize information provided by RTS/NTS and the Branch to assist in planning for the future needs. b) Serve as liaison with truck rental services. c) Serve as liaison with Temp Driver Companies and/or Peak Supplemental Companies. d) Coordinate training in advance of needs with Temp Drivers and/or Peak Supplemental Companies. e) Provide performance feedback to BM/WS as well as the Temp Drivers and/or Peak Supplemental Companies
+ Monitor fleet reports to insure all PM’s and repairs are performed as scheduled.
+ Work with Branch Manager and RTS/NTS to review and process all urgent changes that affect the routing.
+ Co-chair (with Branch Manager) regular driver meetings to review safety and upcoming events (minimum of once per month).
+ Effectively communicate necessary routing information to assist RTS/NTS with routing improvements and driver feedback.
+ Act as reserve DOT driver, to be used in all cases when necessary, during peak times, or in any emergency. Adhere to all Company, local, state and federal rules/regulations inclusive of, but not limited to DOT, OSHA, and EEOC.
+ Assist the Branch Manager in interviewing all prospective drivers and the completion of driver performance evaluations.
+ Train CDL Drivers in company procedures, to include but not limited to, proper safety precautions, acceptable uniform usage, proper verbal delivery presentation to customer, and how to receive a “damage free” book fair.
+ Review for accuracy: trip sheets, fuel tickets, road expenses, all driver DOT log books, and other paperwork, etc. prior to forwarding them to the Branch Manager. Provide feedback to drivers in order to promote improved accuracy and completeness of documents
+ Assist in reviewing preliminary routes to ensure all special request, changes and regional inputs are considered prior to the final routes are completed.
+ Assist, when necessary, in loading/unloading trucks and other warehouse tasks as required, with or without assistance of mechanical devices.
+ Utilize Semi Tractor with either single or tandem axle, automatic transmission, combined with a 28’, 40’, 48’, or 53’ trailer to line haul fairs from branch facility to hub location.
+ Deliver fairs using a Semi Tractor with either single or tandem axle, automatic transmission, combined with a 28’ pup trailer or 40’ trailer. Driver may also need to deliver fairs using a 26’ or 28’ single axle straight/box truck.
+ Work closely with the supervisor to ensure customer service standards are maintained.
+ Load and unload trucks with or without the assistance of mechanical devices.
+ Effectively communicate routing problems to supervisor so changes can be communicated to the routing team (road construction, address changes, steps, etc).
+ Deliver and pick up products from schools, as scheduled, in a courteous and professional manner.
+ To support a safe and secure driving environment, all vehicles are equipped with forward-facing and in-cab cameras to help protect our drivers and ensure peace of mind on every journey.
+ Secure and transport products to enable customer to receive a “Damage Free” fair.
+ Perform a daily pre-trip and post-trip inspection of motor vehicle and trailer to which assigned. Notify supervisor of any defects or problems.
+ Inspect and prepare fifth wheel before coupling. Slide axles as necessary for weight distribution/maneuvering.
+ Couple and uncouple trailers safely and in a timely manner. Connect/disconnect air and brake lines, connect/disconnect lift gate stinger cable, and properly operate landing gear.
+ Complete and maintain accurate and legible records in a timely manner to include, but not limited to, DOT Logs, trip sheets, fuel tickets, road expenses, and other paperwork, as required. Utilize ELD applications and devices to document Hours of Service logs and other required functions.
+ Adhere to all Company, local, state, and federal rules/regulations inclusive of, but not limited to, DOT, FMCSA, IFTA, OSHA, etc.
+ Call Supervisor immediately upon the occurrence of any of the following:
+ Accident or damage to person(s) or property.
+ Problem with a school delivery or pick-up.
+ Mechanical failure of equipment.
+ Overnight routes as necessary.
+ Must maintain professional appearance including well-groomed hair, clean uniform, and hygienic habits; Company uniforms will be provided to all drivers.
+ Attend monthly driver meetings – completing all continuous training materials as required.
+ Utilize proper techniques for lifting, packing, and handling heavy objects, climbing ladders and pushing/pulling display cases.
+ Maintain a clean, organized and safe work environment.
+ Maintain truck per company standards.
+ Regular attendance in accordance with schedule.
+ Drug and alcohol-free policy compliance.
+ Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
What we need:
+ Verifiable commercial driving experience in a Class A CDL/Class 8 combined tractor-trailer vehicle of at least 40,000 miles and 1 year of commercial operation within the last 5 years.
+ Minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age.
+ Possess a valid CDL A license with air brake endorsement.
+ CDL A and safe driving record must be validated through MVR review/background check and PSP record.
+ Previous lead role or supervisory experience is preferred.
+ Must pass a drug screen/alcohol screen, Motor Vehicle Record review, criminal background review, and a DOT physical examination indicating physical essential functions of job can be performed as required.
+ Must be able to drive vehicle weighing in excess of 34,0001 GVW and trailers in excess of 10,000 lbs. with a total combined GVW up to 80,000 lbs.
+ Ability to push/lift/carry up to 70lbs and move aluminum rolling bookcases (up to 70 lbs. of pushing force is required on a regular basis). Cases may have several boxes of books placed on top, which require the ability to reach, remove and lift boxes weighing up to 25 lbs. from the top of bookcases. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
+ Customer service orientated.
+ The FMCSA requires commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers to be able to read and speak English sufficiently to converse with the general public, understand highway traffic signs and signals, respond to official inquiries, and make entries on reports and records
+ High School Diploma or GED Certificate preferred.
+ Ability to work overtime and weekends as needed.
+ Strong team player and the ability to get along with co-workers.
+ Good verbal/written communication skills, basic math skills, and ability to read.
