Job Summary and Qualifications

The Lead Phlebotomist, under the direction of the Lab Supervisor or Director, is responsible for the oversight of the outpatient and inpatient phlebotomy areas. Reviews, prioritizes and assigns specimen collection requests to personnel to ensure timely collections. He/she will obtain and prepare specimens for analysis and responsible for the collection of venous and capillary blood samples using various techniques (i.e. syringe, heel stick, venipunctures, finger stick). Responsible for knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychological, educational, safety and related criteria for the neonate, infant child, adolescent, adult and geriatric population as it affects Phlebotomy. Assist with specimen processing, centrifugation and specimen distribution to laboratory sections. He/she will fax and file reports as needed, and ensure supplies are available and stocked. He/she will be required to maintain pending log and participate in training and AIDET rounding. Actively listens and promotes effective communication flow. Participates in team discussions, provides problem solving ideas and promotes quality improvement of department goals.. He/she must always verify patient identification at bedside, giving instructions to patients when needed. You must wear appropriate personal protective equipment as required. He/she will perform tasks as assigned by the Supervisor within their scope of training.

+ Maintains awareness of own limitations and seeks guidance from appropriate personnel as needed.

+ Prioritizes activities of self based on demands for service.

+ Remains alert to the detection of errors in own work and the work of others with appropriate corrective actions initiated.

+ Demonstrates an understanding of patient rights, including those pertaining to confidentiality, informed decision-making, and privacy.

+ Is aware of resources available for ethical concerns and makes appropriate referrals.

+ Practices cost-efficiently.

+ Performs technical skills proficiently in accordance with established standards, as evidenced by annual validation processes.

+ Successfully obtains blood specimens by Veni-puncture in one attempt 95% of the time.

+ Identifies patient according to established procedure, 100% of the time.

+ Ensures departmental supplies are ordered on designated day, 95% of the time.

+ Processes routine laboratory specimens

What qualifications you will need:

+ Basic Cardiac Life Support

+ (CPT) Certified Phlebotomy Technician, or (PHLEB) Phlebotomy Technician
