The Department of Human Services in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in Counselor Education to teach within and coordinate a new Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialization within the existing M.Ed. program.
The M.Ed. program in Counselor Education (https://education.virginia.edu/academics/programs/counselor-education-med-master-education) is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), with a longstanding specialty area in School Counseling and a new specialty area in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) to begin in Fall 2026. We will seek accreditation for the new CMHC program upon graduation of the first CMHC cohort. The program’s mission is to prepare counselors who are responsive to factors that impact well-being and are equipped to support the mental health, career, and developmental needs of individuals across counseling settings.
The successful candidate will maintain an active and productive program of scholarship focused on innovative practices in counseling, coordinate the new Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialization, contribute to graduate teaching and advising, and engage in service to the school, university, and profession. This is a 9-month, salaried, tenure-eligible, in-person position.

Johnson Center for Clinical Services (SJC) (https://education.virginia.edu/research-initiatives/sheila-c-johnson-center-clinical-services) offers an ideal environment for on-site clinical training and services. The SJC provides multidisciplinary services for individuals of all ages. The SJC, located in the same building as faculty offices, is committed to working collaboratively with faculty to facilitate hands-on training and research activities.

Required Qualifications and Experience
+ REQUIRED: A doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP-accredited program
+ REQUIRED: Established line of independent research related to innovative practices in the field of counseling across various social contexts
+ REQUIRED: Prior counseling experience (beyond experience during graduate training)
+ REQUIRED: At least 3 years of experience teaching graduate-level counseling courses or supervising practicum and internship students
+ REQUIRED:Applicants should hold, or be eligible to obtain, professional counselor licensure in the Virginia within 6 months of hire date
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
+ Preferred: Leadership experience coordinating a CMHC or counselor education program
+ Preferred: Experience with Canvas and/or similar Learning Management Systems
+ Preferred: Experience with procuring fieldwork sites
+ Preferred: A deep knowledge of CACREP accreditation standards
