Microsoft Payments within Commerce + Ecosystems is seeking a Data Engineering Leader to define and execute data strategies for its global fintech platform. The role involves architecting data intelligence solutions, leading a high-performing team, and partnering across product, engineering, and compliance groups to drive innovation in payments experiences, optimizing subscriptions and platform capabilities. You will focus on enhancing user experience, optimizing revenue management, and scaling commerce innovation while fostering an inclusive and growth-oriented culture.

The payments team sits in the Commerce and Ecosystems (C&E) organization and is the heart of all commerce activities at Microsoft such as Xbox, Office and Azure. We are seeking a skilled and visionary Data Engineering Leader to define and execute the data strategy that will shape the next generation of fintech experiences and data platform capabilities for Microsoft’s global ecosystem.
In this role, you will architect and deliver real-time, actionable data intelligence solutions that enhance user experiences across checkout surfaces and payment flows. You will lead innovation in predictive analytics, anomaly detection, and agentic commerce strategies to improve funnel conversion, reduce subscription churn, fraud, and build a future-ready payments data ecosystem.
As our Data Engineering Leader, you will partner with product and cross-functional teams to strategize and define engagement models that drive business effectiveness. Your work will focus on improving cart performance, strengthening cash flow positions, developing predictive models for payment instrument management ultimately impacting on customer experience, revenue realization, and risk management.
You will lead the evolution of all payment data models, including injection and output sources, and ensure alignment through clear communication and executive engagement. By establishing robust data and knowledge foundations, you will enable Microsoft to scale commerce innovation globally and deliver transformative experiences across our ecosystem.
The ideal candidate has a successful track record leading data science and engineering roles that connects user experience, platform capabilities with requirements impacting an ecommerce platform. Customer empathy, outstanding communication, competent in distilling ambiguity, FinTech/Fin Services or ecommerce, and running complex technical and business programs in parallel to be successful in this role that will be central around executing on an overall Microsoft Payments strategy that spans both consumer and commercial businesses.

Responsibilities
Leadership and Collaboration:
+ Foster an inclusive, learning‑oriented culture where diverse ideas are valued.

+ Lead a high‑performing team of data scientists and engineers, promoting innovation and technical rigor.
+ Partner closely with product, engineering, stores (consumer and commercial), and security/compliance teams to align data initiatives with business objectives.
Data Strategy and Architecture:
+ Lead end‑to‑end solution architecture for complex, ambiguous problem spaces; provide technical and people leadership to ensure designs meet security, privacy, and compliance requirements and scale across products and regions.
+ Design and implement scalable data pipelines and real‑time analytics frameworks for checkout and payment systems; identify system and team dependencies, produce clear design artifacts, and orchestrate integrations across services and platforms.
+ Establish robust data governance and quality standards across diverse sources; drive multi‑functional data preparation; and upskill teams on key tools (e.g., SQL, Python).
Advanced Analytics and Modeling:
+ Define KPIs and build predictive models to optimize funnel performance, reduce subscription churn, and detect transaction anomalies.
+ Integrate user experience data with payment transaction data to generate actionable insights that improve customer engagement and revenue outcomes.
+ Develop and operationalize predictive and prescriptive models using advanced research techniques, including statistics, optimization, and probability theory. Direct experimental methodologies and oversee data and statistical analyses across multiple teams to ensure accuracy and scalability.
+ Establish and enforce best practices, coding patterns, and validation strategies to deliver testable, high‑quality code. Define and reuse quality metrics to maintain consistency and reliability across data pipelines and analytics frameworks.
+ Oversee cross-team data and statistical analyses while continuously monitoring and refining predictive models to ensure accuracy, scalability, and business impact.
Agentic Commerce Enablement:
+ Build systems that leverage anomaly detection and adaptive algorithms for autonomous commerce transactions.
+ Collaborate with engineering teams to embed intelligence into payment workflows.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
+ Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering work
+ OR Master's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years' experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering work
+ OR equivalent experience.
+ 3+ years of experience with payments data systems, checkout UX flows, funnel conversions, and subscription models.
Other Requirements
+ Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
+ Microsoft Cloud Background Check:This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience** **/Education** **:
+ Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or related fields.
+ 8+ years in data science roles with at least 3 years in technical leadership capacity.
+ Proven experience in real-time data processing, machine learning, and predictive analytics.
+ Experience in anomaly detection for financial transactions.
+ Familiarity with agentic commerce and autonomous transaction frameworks.
+ Knowledge of compliance and security standards in global payments
Technical Skills:
+ Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, and big data technologies (Spark, Hadoop).
+ Experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred) and streaming frameworks (Kafka, Flink).
**Data Engineering M5** - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
