    Position Description

    The Safety Inspector will be responsible for departmental safety inspections, investigations and training associated with maintaining the well-being of all Metro Water Services (MWS) employees. This position will work within the MWS Safety Office to ensure all activities meet TOSHA regulations and other applicable laws, regulations and rules applied in a construction and industrial setting.

     

    Employees at MWS work around the clock to supply, treat, manage, and protect our water resources in a sustainable manner for the benefit of all who live, work, and play in our community. Our dedicated, diverse workforce provides high quality drinking water and the best in wastewater treatment, storm water management, and waste collection services for our customers in the Nashville-Davidson County area. Our employees work together to service more than 210,000 water and 216,000 sewer accounts along with over 150,000 curbside waste collection customers. We are looking for highly engaged individuals to join our team.

    Typical Duties

    + Develops and implement safety training programs including but not limited to confined space entry, flaggers, trench/shoring safety, lockout/tagout, etc.

    + Maintains a log or database of employee safety training compliance.

    + Assists in development of individualized safety training plans based on employee work assignments.

    + Makes observations of MWS work sites, documenting that employees are following MWS and Metro Government policies, procedures, and rules.

    + Assists in ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations by maintaining safety records and employee safety certification records.

    + Conducts inspections of facilities to identify potential hazards and suggest corrective actions.

    + Conducts investigations of accident scenes involving MWS vehicles and employees.

    + Reviews data to report, benchmark, and trend safety data.

    + Conducts pre-employment field tests to determine equipment operator knowledge.

    + Oversees departmental Substance Abuse program.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of industrial/occupational safety experience.

     

    *Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education on a 1:1 ratio.

    Valid Driver License

     

    Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

     

    Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

     

    Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

     

    + Certification in related safety programs such as OSHA 30-hour, Certified Safety Professional

    + Current certification in First Aid, CPR

    + Current certifications in Work Zone Traffic Control, Excavation Safety, and/or Confined Space Entry.

    + Experience in managing injury-on-duty (IOD) programs

    + Experience in safety inspections related to construction and general industry activities
