This role requires full time on site presence.
Your role
CBC North is seeking a television producer to lead the daily production of Northbeat, the 30-minute supper-hour newscast for Yukon, Northwest Territories (NWT) and Nunavut, as well as support Igalaaq, the 30-minute Inuktitut supper-hour newscast in Nunavut.
This is a challenging, pan-territorial role. Working with a host and production team in Yellowknife, the successful candidate will work with assignment producers and reporters in three territories to determine the content and structure of the show. This will include selecting and prioritizing stories, coordinating live shots, scripting segments and managing the show’s timing. The producer will also liaise with the control room on technical aspects, including graphics and video feeds. The goal is to deliver accurate and compelling news to a broad and diverse audience, while complying with CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices (JSP).
This role offers broad potential for travel, both in terms of taking the show on the road and for getting to know all three territories. This role also brings the opportunity to get creative, either with video treatments or storytelling. Additionally, this role includes the opportunity to mentor and guide
young reporters.
The successful candidate will bring journalistic rigour and a broad sense of what is possible in northern television. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a strong connection to, or knowledge of, northern and Indigenous communities.
Key Tasks:
• Direct the television team and establish the editorial plan each day.
• Work with regional assignment producers to determine story treatments and deliverables.
• Manage story development with reporters and work with the host and lineup producer to refine focus, angles, and structure.
• Write, vet, and review scripts, stories and question lines for the shows.
• Work closely with the host to support delivery and performance and brainstorm and develop special programming, series, etc.
• Collaborate with the TV lineup producer to determine the look, feel, style, pace and format of the program.
• Guide and support the team with ongoing feedback.
Requirements:
• A university degree or an equivalent of education and experience, plus five years of practical and relevant experience in journalism, including broadcast news.
• Demonstrated experience leading a team or unit and proven ability to direct others.
• Demonstrated experience in video story development.
• Ability to work effectively to deadline.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
• A strong sense of creativity, initiative and a high degree of responsibility for the accuracy and quality of work.
• Curiosity, critical thinking and an ability to work effectively in a high pressure environment.
• Knowledge of a northern Indigenous language will be considered a major asset.
• An ability to work overtime as required.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next
step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:
+ A mandatory Criminal record check.
+ Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
