Job Summary:
The Newell Outdoor and Recreation (O&R) segment portfolio enables outdoor, backyard, and indoor fun across apparel, tents, coolers, camping stoves and other burning appliances, and hydration/thermal drinkware. We are seeking a Senior Product Safety Specialist to lead product safety and regulatory compliance activities for assigned categories across the US, Canada, and other regions. This role partners closely with R&D, Quality, Sourcing, Legal, and Commercial teams to embed safety and compliance into new product development and sustaining engineering, ensuring our products meet or exceed applicable laws, regulations, standards, and retailer requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Own safety & compliance strategy for assigned categories; act as the subject-matter expert guiding cross-functional teams through regulatory pathways and retailer requirements, ensure that all certification and regulatory activities are conducted within established budget, performance, and schedule constraints.
+ Plan and manage certifications/approvals with third-party agencies (FDA, DOT) and labs (e.g., UL/CSA/SGS) and EU conformity assessment and CE marking (e.g., General Product Safety Regulation, REACH, RoHS, applicable directives/regulations, and food-contact requirements for drinkware).
+ Translate requirements into design inputs for NPD and sustaining projects, including labeling, warnings, manuals/IFUs, packaging, and e-commerce content.
+ Lead hazard analysis and risk assessments (e.g., hazard-based safety principles, FMEA/HARA); define verification/validation and compliance test plans and review engineering test results.
+ Develops product safety test plans and implements existing testing methodologies on a program level and recommends improvements to Product Safety management team.
+ Develops and refines internal Product Safety acceptance criteria and helps junior staff resolve anomalous results and implement corrective actions.
+ Track and interpret emerging regulations/standards in the US/CA/EU; recommend actions and implement changes to maintain ongoing conformity.
+ Maintain compliance documentation: technical files, risk assessments, declarations of conformity, traceability, and change control.
+ Manage chemical compliance: monitor chemicals of concern (e.g., REACH SVHCs, Proposition 65), maintain and communicate the O&R Restricted Substances List (RSL), steward SDS updates, and manage retailer chemical portals (e.g., WERCS).
+ Resolve safety issues and incidents in partnership with Quality and Legal; investigate consumer contacts, drive CAPA, and recommend design/process improvements.
+ Coach and train cross-functional partners on safety/regulatory expectations, test methods, and documentation best practices.
+ Deliver schedule/budget for compliance activities, proactively communicate risk, mitigation, and status to stakeholders
+ Be located in our Wichita or Atlanta facilities
+ Be hybrid working at least 3 days per week in office
+ Able to travel up to 25% as needed to support role
_Qualifications_
+ College degree or equivalent work experience.
+ 5-7 years of regulatory compliance experience required.
+ Demonstrated working knowledge of US, Canadian, and EU frameworks and standards relevant to outdoor equipment, portable lighting, gas-fueled appliances, and hydration/thermal drinkware (e.g., UL/CSA/ETL, CPSC/Health Canada consumer product safety requirements; CE marking with GPSR, REACH, RoHS; applicable directives/regulations for gas appliances, Low Voltage/EMC; food-contact compliance for drinkware; UN 38.3 battery transport).
+ Excellent project management, time management, analytical, problem solving, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
+ Conscientious and able to work with confidential information on a daily basis.
+ Strong analytical, problem-solving, and root-cause skills; able to influence without authority in a matrixed environment.
+ Excellent verbal/written communication and cross-functional partnership; highly organized self-starter able to manage multiple projects.
+ Demonstrates strong leadership and mentoring skills for team member interactions
_Preferred Qualifications_
+ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Materials) or a related science field.
+ 6-10 years of related experience required
+ Previous experience leading people or is interested in a leadership track in the next 1-3 years
+ Previous experience with consumer products preferred
+ Previous product safety experience in textile products, regulatory compliance for apparel and other textile products
+ Experience working with North American agencies (CSA, UL, Intertek, USCG, CPSC, FDA)
+ Experience interpreting and implementing retailer requirements (e.g., REI, Costco, Walmart) and managing WERCS/WERCSmart submissions.
+ Participation in standards development committees or industry working groups.
+ Experience in post-market surveillance, trend analysis, and recall/field action support.
