    Johnson & Johnson is recruiting for a Biomedical Engineering Intern – Surgical Imaging, located in Raritan, NJ

     

    Our team is at the forefront of developing advanced imaging technology aimed at improving laparoscopic and robotic surgeries. Project development currently requires use of in vivo models, which present limitations due to resource requirements, slow turnaround times, and difficulty controlling the tissue state.

     

    To overcome these challenges, we are initiating the development of benchtop ex vivo and in vitro models. These models are designed to simulate human blood and tissue accurately, facilitating quicker and more controlled testing scenarios. Through our enhanced lab capabilities, we will be able to significantly expedite and refine development of our laparoscopic camera's software and algorithms.

    Key Responsibilities:

    + Design and develop benchtop ex vivo and in vitro models simulating human tissue and blood

    + Plan and implement experiments to validate model performance and imaging capabilities

    + Collaborate with cross-functional teams including imaging scientists and software engineers

    + Automate testing workflows to improve efficiency and reproducibility

    + Maintain detailed documentation of experimental procedures and results

    + Present findings and insights to the broader R&D team

    + Support validation of imaging algorithms using benchtop models

    + Explore innovative materials and methods to improve model realism and functionality

    Qualifications

    Education:

    + Current student pursuing a MS or PhD or equivalent experience

    Experience and Skills:

    Required:

    + Currently enrolled in an accredited university or college program throughout the internship duration (not necessarily taking classes). Pursuing a master’s or PhD degree.

    + Available to work full-time (40 hours/week) and during hours agreed upon with the hiring manager.

    + Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 reflective of all coursework

    + Commitment to June 1 – August 21, 2026, or June 22 – September 4, 2026, term dates to align with cohort

    + Target majors include Automation Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Robotics Engineering or closely related field.

    Preferred:

    + Experience with laboratory research, especially in tissue modeling, fluid dynamics, optics, or medical device testing.

    + Familiarity with experimental design and data analysis techniques.

    + Hands-on experience with lab equipment, sensors, and imaging systems is a plus.

    + Programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for data processing and automation.

    + Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

    + Excellent communication skills for documenting and presenting technical findings.

    + Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced R&D environment.

    + Enthusiasm for innovation in medical technology and improving patient outcomes.

     

    Permanently authorized to work in the U.S., must not require sponsorship of an employment visa (e.g., H-1B or green card) at the time of application or in the future. Students currently on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT usually requires future sponsorship for long term employment and do not meet the requirements for this program unless eligible for an alternative long-term status that does not require company sponsorship.

     

    _The expected pay range for this position is between $23.00 per hour and $51.50 per hour but will be based on candidate's program year, discipline, degree and/or experience. Co-Ops/Interns are eligible to participate in Company sponsored employee medical benefits in accordance with the terms of the plan. Co-Ops and Interns are eligible for the following sick time benefits: up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington, up to 56 hours per calendar year. Co-Ops and Interns are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension)._

    The anticipated base pay range for this position is :
