Job Description
This is a temporary part-time position with BAE Systems SMS. This candidate may be considered for the Summer 2026 LEAP Internship Program.
At BAE Systems SMS, we deliver a full range of products and services for air, land and space, as well as advanced electronics, security, information technology solutions and customer support services.
The Materials & Process Engineering department is a part of the Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit which comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers missions. What You ll Do:
+ Develop, evaluate, select, and document materials and processes to meet the engineering design requirements of various devices for use in a wide variety of environments (aerospace, military, commercial).
+ Use analytical skills in chemical and mechanical applications.
+ Define, plan, and implement materials and process investigations/analyses.
+ Consult with and assist BAE SMS and customer organizations (e.g. project, engineering, production, integration, and test, etc.) on use of such materials and processes.
+ Interpret laboratory test results and develop conclusions for a variety of analytical techniques possibly including thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, gas chromatography, digital microscopy, high vacuum, and mechanical testing for use in modeling, etc.
+ Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
+ Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
+ Perform other duties as necessary.
**On-Site Work Environment:** This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site three or more days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.
Working Conditions:
+ Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
+ May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
+ May access other facilities in various weather conditions.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
+ High School diploma or equivalent is required.
+ Each higher-level related degree, i.e., Bachelor s or Master s, may substitute for two years of related experience. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.

A DoD Interim Secret clearance will be required to start work and required to be maintained to continue work. Higher level clearance or access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position. However, the applicant must be willing and eligible for submission, depending on program requirements, after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
+ Enrollment in sophomore or junior year of college in a degree program for the fall of 2026. We will also accept students enrolled in a graduate degree program.
+ Enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program for Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or related degree field.
+ Motivated self-starter with leadership skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
+ Excellent problem-solving skills, judgment, and analytical capability.
+ Ability to close on discrete tasking in a timely manner.
+ Solid technical writing and communication skills.
+ Demonstrated ability to lead material and process design investigations, and apply information obtained from with laboratory test data.
+ Understanding of the use and interpretation of data obtained from analytical equipment, including SEM/EDS, FTIR, XRF, Thermal Analysis, tensile/compression or other acquired knowledge.
+ Ability to use computer and associated software to gather, reduce, and disseminate technical information.
+ Experience in designing with and working with polymers and/or composites.
+ Familiarity with NASA, military or industry specifications, especially materials test (e.g. ASTM) procedures.
Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $39219 - $62751
Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
Temporary employees generally are not eligible for BAE Systems benefits, but can elect to participate in the 401(k) savings plan. Temporary employees working 20 hours per week are eligible for medical benefits, the employee assistance program, and business travel accident insurance.
