    Job Description

    This position is a temporary vacancy covering for an employee on leave. The position is expected to end on 12/08/25 when the current employee returns to work. At that time, the covering employee will be terminated from the position.

     

    Department: Transportation

     

    Reports to: Assistant Director of Operations

     

    Manager, Transportation Operations

     

    The Operations Manager will oversee the day to day functions of the Department of Transportation.

     

    Reporting to the Assistant Director of Operations, the Operations Manager oversees the smooth day-to-day functioning of the Boston Public Schools Department of Transportation. The position will be based out of the Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building in Roxbury and will work closely with the Operations Staff located at the four Transdev bus yards to implement systems and procedures that maximize efficiency and build strong contractor-customer relationships. This person has shared supervision over the Operations Coordinator. In addition to site-specific duties, this person will also assist with department-wide functions as identified by the Director of Transportation and/or the Assistant Director of Operations.

     

    The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills; and the ability to design, facilitate, and manage processes that support the Department of Transportation’s commitment to providing our students safe, on-time, and reliable service. S/he will thrive in an adaptive environment, hold and meet a high bar for quality and a standard of excellence. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, have excellent organizational and project management skills; be an analytical and strategic thinker.

     

    This is a full-time, year-round position with competitive salary and benefits.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Oversee Department of Transportation day-to-day operations.

    + Direct and drive operational efficiencies that achieve operational and financial performance expectations.

    + Manage communication with Transdev and other external entities.

    + Provide daily direction and support to on-site Operations Coordinator.

    + Ensure effective and efficient workflow and communications processes are in place.

    + Oversee the resolution of daily service issues submitted to the Operations Coordinator.

    + Collaborate with Operations staff here at BPS and at Transdev to achieve optimal solutions.

    + Host weekly meeting with Transdev Operations staff to resolve ongoing service issues.

    + Continually investigate, introduce and support continuous improvement efforts.

    + Utilize BPS routing software to determine the validity of route problems or transportation eligibility.

    + Provide coverage to Supplemental Transportation Manager.

    + Perform other related duties as requested by the Director or Assistant Director.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

    The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple communication methods; adept at giving and receiving direction; and effective in interactions with the contractor, school leaders, and families. An ability to have a strong understanding of the details of our operation is also a must.

    Qualifications - Required:

    + Bachelor’s degree or 5+ years of experience in an operations role.

    + Exceptional customer service skills

    + Advanced skills with data entry and analysis using cloud-based database systems.

    + Strong oral and written communication skills (proactive, concise, solution-oriented, and responsive to email communications).

    + Flexible and entrepreneurial with strong problem-solving abilities and a can-do, team-spirited approach.

    + Ability to handle multiple and often time-sensitive responsibilities with confidence, grace, and independence.

    + Exceptional ability to read, understand, and follow written procedures.

    + Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion to maintain the confidentiality of students, staff, and families

    + Ability and willingness to take direction and follow through on tasks to completion.

    + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).

    + Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment

    Qualifications - Preferred:

    + Master’s degree preferred

    + 7+ years of relevant experience preferred

    + Work experience as a supervisor or manager of other staff.

    + Working knowledge of at least one of the following languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Vietnamese, or Haitian Creole.

    + Experience with routing software, such as VersaTrans RP

     

    TERMS: Managerial, 12 months, Tier C. This position subject to the City of Boston residency requirement.

    NOTE: School-based managerial employees will work 223 days between July 1st and June 30th each year. The 223 day work-year will include the 180 days in which school is in session, and the additional days will be determined by the employee and the principal or headmaster of the school. This position subject to the City of Boston residency requirement.

     

    School-based managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time. In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather, school-based managerial employees need not report to work.
