A Histologist is proficient in and responsible for accessioning and processing all tissue, surgical specimens, foreign bodies, orthopedic devices, and other specimens removed during surgery. This close-knit team is known for their teamwork and collaboration. This team is driven and strives to provide quality patient results daily.

A caregiver in this role works day/evening rotation from 10:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

+ Process all cytology, biopsy, and aspirate specimens received from other patient care areas.

+ Perform immunocytochemical stains and assist the pathologist in processing tissue for immediate frozen sections.

+ Arrange for submission of various tissue and gynecological specimens, which include thin preps and prepared smears to reference laboratories.

+ Report pertinent information to the pathologist, patient care area, or supervisor (i.e. instrument malfunctions, delay in testing, reagent, or supply depletion.)

+ Maintain cleanliness of work areas and keep work areas organized and stocked.

+ Follow safety procedures and utilize all safety devices and personal protective equipment per protocol.

+ Follow procedures and refer to procedure manuals for proper instructions when needed.

+ Be proficient in operating instrumentation and equipment and follow trouble-shooting procedures to correct deficiencies or problems as they occur.

+ Ensure instrument operations and results are reliable and perform maintenance checks, startups, and/or shutdowns as assigned or as required.

+ Answer telephones, greet customers and provide consults and technical support to the pathologists, physicians, and nursing staff.

+ Follow quality control policy and ensure controls are within acceptable limits before patient results are reported.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

+ High School education

+ Current license in the State of Florida at the Histology or Cytology Technologist level

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

+ Associate's Degree or higher from a NACCLS approved Histotechnology program OR a Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Biological Science

+ HT/L (ASCP) certification

+ Two years of hospital experience

+ Ability to work with tissue processors

Pay Range

Minimum hourly: $34.00

Maximum hourly: $45.65
