Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.
Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum
$26.60 - $30.58 - $36.16
Summary:
Schedule: Part Time; 20hrs per week; 1st Shift; 3 days per week (8.5 hrs daily)
This position is responsible for the accurate coding of either inpatient coding or outpatient coding. All tasks need to be performed following the Operating Principles of Baystate Health
Job Responsibilities:
**1)** Review medical record documentation for the accurate assignment of ICD-9-CM and/or CPT codes to medical records.
**2)** Ensure the quality and integrity of coding which includes accurate determination of principal diagnosis, secondary diagnoses, primary procedure and secondary procedures based on all approved documentation in an inpatient/outpatient record and the appropriate code assignment based on coding conventions.
**3)** Participates in educational coding meetings either onsite or offsite.
**4)** Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
**5)** Contributes to the general efficiency of the section and the department.
**6)** Works with HIM Compliance to address documentation and improve quality.
**7)** Meets, maintains and sometimes exceeds the departmental policy on productivity and quality.
**8)** Assists in training of Coding Specialist-Associate when needed.
Required Work Experience:
2-4 years experience as a coder in a hospital setting
A pre-employment test for new hires must be completed with demonstrated knowledge and experience in the inpatient/outpatient coding

**1)** None Listed
Skills and Competencies:
**1)** Thorough knowledge of ICD-9-CM codes, CPT codes, APC's, APG's, and DRG's, as appropriate
Thorough knowledge and experience with Microsoft Windows programs
Thorough knowledge of 3M end coder
Ability to work independently with little direction.
Education:
GED or HiSET (Required)

Certified Coding Specialist - American Health Information Management AssociationAmerican Health Information Management Association, Certified Professional Coder - American Academy of Professional CodersAmerican Academy of Professional Coders
