Yes County Albany Street Address 10 Corporate Woods Drive City Albany State NY Zip Code 12211 Duties Description Position SummaryReporting to the Managing Director of Private Equity, this position is responsible for helping to oversee the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System’s private equity department which includes private equity and private debt. Key areas of responsibility include strategy, team building and mentoring, investment due diligence, performance monitoring and reporting, compliance, and associated operations.Job DutiesThe duties of the Deputy Managing Director-Private Debt include, but are not limited to, the following:Assist the Managing Director of Private Equity with oversight of the Private Equity and Private Debt portfoliosAssist the Managing Director of Private Equity with creating and executing on a long-term strategic plan as it relates to investments, staffing and professional developmentIn the absence of the Managing Director of Private Equity, represent Private Equity at Executive staff, committee, and Board related meetingsOversee and participate in various administrative activities including annual budget process, and investment policy manual reviewParticipation on internal committeesPeriodic travel requiredActive involvement in the Private Markets community to stay current with industry trends and establish and maintain professional networksDevelop and implement strategic and tactical asset allocation of the private equity and private debt portfolios in conjunction with the System’s non-discretionary consultantsDevelop and implement a rigorous evaluation process to ensure selection of managers for the System’s portfolio including all stages of investment due diligence process and legal document negotiations on business issues in conjunction with NYSTRS’ legal department and external fund counselMonitor existing investments and assist in managing relationships with the System’s non-discretionary consultants, General Partners of the System’s private equity and private debt investments and other Limited Partners (“LPs”) Minimum Qualifications Minimum QualificationsA bachelor’s degree and twelve (12) years of institutional investment experience with an investment management organization, pension consulting firm or plan sponsor, including:Ten (10) years of leadership experience including managing and developing staff, and experience interacting at Executive/Board level; ANDTen (10) years of Private Equity and/or Private Debt investment management experience including conducting research, sourcing opportunities, conducting and managing the due diligence process, and making recommendations to an Investment Committee and/or Board; ANDCFA and/or CAIA CharterholderPreferred QualificationsMaster’s degree in business administration, finance, accounting or a closely related field15 years of underwriting experience in private equity and or private debt15 years of supervising and mentoring staffStrong professional network including both general partners and limited partnersExperience serving on Limited Partner Advisory CommitteesExperience underwriting co-investments and secondary transactionsAbility to make and support business and investment decisions while taking into consideration other viewpoints and enterprise-wide needsExcellent interpersonal communication skillsExcellent verbal and written communication skillsAttention to detailAbility to organize and prioritize work in a dynamic and complex environment to meet deadlines and daily requirementsSelf-motivated with the ability to work independently but also as a team playerCommitment to providing exceptional customer serviceStrong analytical skillsWorking knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Additional Comments Currently we have a hybrid work schedule which may be subject to change in the futureTravel is required of this position; possibly up to 40% of the timeTo be considered for a position at NYSTRS, you must apply through our applicant portal.
