Summary This position is located in the Engineering Service at VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System - Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center in Leavenworth, KS. The Laundry Equipment Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing all laundry equipment for the Laundry that services multiple VA Medical Centers. Responsibilities The Laundry Equipment Mechanic performs routine maintenance and repair of laundry equipment by working in an independent manner under the direct supervision of the HVAC Maintenance Supervisor. Major duties and responsibilities included but not limited to: Performing routine and complex maintenance, inspections, and repairs on commercial and industrial laundry equipment, including electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems Installing heavy-duty laundry equipment and components, connecting systems to power sources, and conducting operational and performance testing using specialized tools Reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and work orders to ensure accurate installation, repair, and calibration of equipment Maintaining and servicing laundry equipment including ironers, washers, dryers, folders, compressors, feeders, transport systems, garment rails, and monorails to ensure efficient operation Diagnosing and resolving complex mechanical and electrical issues in industrial laundry equipment while ensuring adjustments, safety compliance, and adherence to regulations and industry standards Dismantling, relocating, and reinstalling industrial laundry equipment while using diagnostic tools to take precise measurements and determine necessary repairs, materials, and estimated completion time Applying trade knowledge to select tools, make accurate diagnoses, and perform repairs, adjustments, modifications, and installations of laundry equipment and auxiliary systems according to technical Practices Repairing, replacing, and adjusting laundry equipment controls, piping systems, safety controls, pneumatic components, and installing or rearranging equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and continuous operation Making precision alignments, operating machine tools to fabricate parts, and managing water treatment systems for alkali control, softness, and related laundry equipment concerns Troubleshooting mechanical issues, performing diagnostics, conducting tests, and applying technical trade practices for balancing, adjusting, and maintaining laundry equipment to eliminate performance and repair problems Performing other related duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 08:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved Requirements Conditions of Employment You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959 Pre-employment physical required Subject to background/security investigation Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. Qualifications PHYSICAL EFFORT: The physical demands of the position will be that normally required of a journeyman trades-person. Specific physical requirements (as detailed in the Certificate of Medical Examination) for the position include walking, standing, bending, sitting, crawling, and climbing, and lifting, arduous physical effort is required in the performance of manual tasks and continuous standing for extended periods of time when performing trade tasks. Some heavy lifting (equipment and materials), movement of ladders required along with the stamina to perform physical labor. Incumbent must have good vision, with or without glasses. May lift or carry tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 50 pounds. May occasionally lift and carry items over 50 pounds. Use of fingers, hands required, walking, standing, repeated bending, both legs required, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, and hearing (aid permitted). Daily tasks are of sustained physical effort in handling equipment and other heavy objects when they are installed. WORK CONDITIONS: Incumbent may work from ladders, scaffolding, and/or hydraulic platforms. This position requires working in uncontrolled environments, in inclement weather conditions, and in confined or uncomfortable spaces. Many work sites are hot, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant odors. Occasionally it is subject to possible dangerous working conditions including exposure to hazards normally encountered in the hospital trades and various types of infections. May be subject to electrical shock and/or electrical burns, cuts, bruises, and strains. Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner. Must have thorough knowledge of trade techniques, materials and equipment in order to instruct employees. Work is performed inside, outside or both. Position is constantly subject to hand and eye injury and exposed to considerable dust and noise while working around equipment. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
