    We are seeking a Life Raft Technician to provide support at Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) Product Family located in San Diego, CA. This Life Raft Technician will be responsible for accomplishing ship’s life raft mechanical repairs and testing onboard ships and in the shop. Support shall include removal, repairs, recertification, installation, troubleshooting, and testing on various ships’ life rafts and survival components.

     

    What You Will Do

     

    + Possess the ability to conduct precision measuring and inspection utilizing calibrated standards; pull-force devices; and pressure, humidity, and temperature gauges.

    + Accomplish mechanical repairs and testing onboard ships and in the shop. Support shall include removal, repairs, recertification, installation, troubleshooting, and testing on various ships’ life rafts and survival components in accordance with Formal Work Packages (FWPs) and applicable technical documentation sign-off steps, ensuring adherence to technical authority requirements.

    + Must be able to ensure proper storage, handling, and inspection of pyrotechnic items in accordance with SWRMC B10-0117-910, Pyrotechnic Handling Procedures Standard Operation Procedure 01.

    + Must be able to recertify, remove, repair/replace, replenish, install, test, transport ship-to-shop, rebuild, pack, label, and band U.S. Navy life rafts, inflation system valves, and hydrostatic release devices (HRDs) in accordance with S9008-AA-PRO-010 Inspection, Test and Repair Procedures for Life Raft, Inflatable MK-7 and MK-8 and Viking Final Assembly and Service Manual 50 DK USN Life Rafts. Life raft components worked on include flare bags, flare kits, and emergency abandon ship bags.

    + Work with and ensure proper disposal of HAZWASTE during the removal process of expired items from life rafts and survival bags.

    + Assess life rafts to determine the extent of wear and damage and provide justification for repair/reuse or disposal recommendations.

    + Submit all completed work tasks for review by the Government for conformance with original work instructions, technical specifications, and QA requirements and documentation.

    + Must be able to maintain a Strategic Contingency Pool of RFI life rafts.

    + Must be able to inspect, use, and maintain calibrated test equipment, calibrated torque wrenches, and special tools to include the following TMDE: torque wrenches, calibrated air pressure gauges, Mod-1 top-off valves, and pull-force testers. Ensure current calibration prior to calibrated tool usage.

    + Must be able to work in-shop and onboard ships. Occasionally, repairs and installations may be required in areas with inclement weather and high noise levels requiring hearing protection. At times, working conditions may be uncomfortable, with oil, grease, dirt, dampness, and excess noise and vibration present.

     

    What You Must Have

     

    + High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 4 years of related experience. Prefer technical/professional certifications.

    + Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.

    + Must be able to obtain and maintain certification in ammunition and explosives handling in accordance with OPNAVINST 8023.24, Navy Personnel Ammunition and Explosives Handling Qualification and Certification Program, to include passing both the physical exam and online training course. Formal written certification documentation shall be provided to Production Department management personnel.

    + Must be able to obtain and maintain qualification to the contractor’s Fall Protection Program, when required.

    + Must be able to complete OHSA 10, CPR, fall protection training, low speed vehicle training (for operation of carts), and PQS 301 Craftsman qualification within ninety (90) days.

    + May require forklift license depending on shop need – will require forklift physical.

    + Must be able to obtain and maintain CAC ID Base access and DoD Security Clearance.

    + Start date contingent upon approval of base access which is required for this position and continued employment.

     

    Bonus Points For...

     

    + A current, valid DoD confidential security clearance or higher.

    + Recent Life Raft Technician experience.

    + Prefer technical/professional certifications.

    Physical Requirements

    + Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs.

    + Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.

    + Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.

    + May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
