Job Overview
The College of Arts & Sciences is the largest academic unit at Georgetown University. It has over 500 full-time (380 tenure-line) faculty and hundreds of part-time faculty across 26 academic departments, 13 interdisciplinary programs, and multiple centers and initiatives. The College has over 150 staff that support its instructional and research mission.
Reporting to the Dean, the Chief of Staff provides high-level strategic and operational support to the Dean, and, by extension, his leadership team. The Chief of Staff responds and acts on behalf of the Dean using tact and diplomacy in matters of a highly sensitive and confidential nature, including interactions with senior university officials, faculty members, staff, students, and alumni. The position serves as deputy to the Dean in the following functions: the design and execution of strategic planning and initiatives; master space-planning; communications, both internal and external; fundraising, alumni and other external relations; Dean’s Office operations.
The Chief of Staff handles a wide range of matters of institutional importance on behalf of the Dean. The position helps to formulate and manage strategic initiatives, directs progress towards meeting goals and achieving benchmarks, ensures follow-through on the part of key persons, and sustains momentum needed to drive initiatives to completion. The Chief of Staff ensures timely and effective implementation of the team's priorities and strategic initiatives. The Chief of Staff works in close collaboration with the Office of Advancement and its liaison(s) to the school on issues related to the College’s fundraising and other outreach efforts. The position also works closely with the College’s Director of Communications to establish and maintain a consistent messaging strategy that is aligned with the Dean’s vision and values.
Duties include but are not limited to:
+ Manages the Dean’s strategic initiatives, directs progress towards meeting goals and achieving benchmarks, ensures follow-through on the part of key persons, and sustains momentum needed to drive initiatives to completion.
+ Works with the Dean to address student, faculty and staff issues ranging from performance challenges to threat assessment. This person may represent the Dean in selected internal and external interactions with faculty, staff, students, alumni, senior University administrators as well as government and community leaders.
+ Conducts research and assimilates data for presentations and projects; evaluates data and prepares reports; must possess outstanding technology and data analysis skills.
+ Acts as part of a highly collaborative leadership team that advises the Dean on all areas of the school’s operations. Reviews and recommends procedural, technological, and policy changes to ensure institutional compliance and continuous improvement of work processes.
+ Engage in master planning for space managed by the College of Arts & Sciences.
+ Ensures effective stakeholder management by maintaining strong and cooperative relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and donors. Builds effective ties with the leadership teams of other Georgetown schools.
+ Acts as College liaison to the University President and Provost Offices, General Counsel, the Offices of Public Affairs, Strategic Communications, Protocol and Events, and other partner offices in various capacities.
Work Interactions
The position reports to the Dean and works closely with the Dean’s senior leadership team. The position also works in close collaboration with the Director of Communications and Office of Advancement’s liaison role(s) to the College. The Chief of Staff ensures effective stakeholder management by maintaining strong and cooperative relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and donors, and must build effective ties with the leadership teams of other Georgetown schools. The Chief of Staff handles as many issues as appropriate directly on behalf of the Dean. The position will engage with University officials to include the Office of the University President, Office of the Provost, Chairs, Deans and Directors. The Chief will supervise at least one FTE, the Program Manager and Special Assistant to the Dean, a manager who also supervises two FTEs, responsible for the Senior Events Coordinator and the overall administrative management of the Dean’s Office. The Chief of Staff also supports the Dean in the management of the School’s Board of Advisors and coordinates visits by high level constituencies and other key stakeholders.
Requirements and Qualifications
+ Master’s degree as well as significant professional experience in higher education administration, or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills, including comfort with public presentations to a wide range of audiences.
+ Ability to develop innovative approaches and adapt to changes in policies and technologies.
+ Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet time-sensitive deadlines.
+ Strong orientation to detail and deadlines.
+ Strong desire to achieve results.
+ Excellent customer service skills.
+ Experience in a school of arts and sciences is highly desirable. Exceptional interpersonal skills.
+ Proven managerial ability.
+ Demonstrated ability to organize teams to achieve results.
+ Ability to think strategically while balancing several complex agendas.
+ Ability to interact and influence at the most senior levels of the University and to work collaboratively across functions, levels and departments toward shared objectives.

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$103,723.00 - $202,778.93
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
