Job Summary
The Office of Undergraduate Education at CU Boulder encourages applications for the Assistant Vice Provost for Undergraduate Academic Experience (AVPUAE) position! This role will lead initiatives to enhance the academic experiences of first- and second-year undergraduate students, focusing on student success through strategic program oversight and collaboration across campus and assessing effectiveness of student success initiatives alongside OUE leadership. This role will lead and develop key programs, align curriculum and assessment with program development, and coordinate with schools and colleges and with Student Life and Enrollment Management to support retention and academic achievement.
The AVPUAE reports directly to the Dean and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and provides strategic leadership for campus residential learning communities and the Program in Exploratory Studies (PES). This role oversees staff and budget for PES and campus wide first-year experience initiatives, including Residential Learning Communities (RLCs).
Key responsibilities include coordinating cross-campus first-year research seminars, learning outcomes, curriculum assessment collaboration, mid-term alerts, CU-101, and retention campaigns such as Early Alert. The AVPUAE also leads student data and assessment processes to support student success. This work requires close collaboration with OUE leadership and campus partners, including advising units, deans' offices, Student Life, Enrollment Management, the Registrar, OIT, and the Office of Data Analytics.
The AVPUAE sets goals for first- and second-year student success, develops operational guidelines for new programs, and drives program growth through collaborative leadership. The role supervises management and executive-level staff. Who We Are
The Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) oversees the academic undergraduate experience at CU Boulder, provides extraordinary educational experiences, serves exploring students and collaborates with a variety of units to ensure that students have access to the resources they need to succeed.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Program in Exploratory Studies (PES):
+ Provide strategic leadership, oversight, and advocacy for the Program in Exploratory Studies, directly supervising and partnering with an Assistant Dean and a Director of Advising, who handle academic policies, enrollment, curriculum, advising, and staff resources to support student exploration and success. The Program in Exploratory Studies currently serves a student population of over 3,000 undergraduate students and includes approximately 22 professional staff.
+ Handle personnel and fiscal resources and assess and prioritize resource needs.
+ Create and deploy data tools related to PES activities and impact.
+ Represent the Program in Exploratory Studies on campus committees and projects, and advise executive leadership on issues pertaining to PES.
+ Advocate with campus partners in Enrollment Management and assistant/associate deans in colleges, schools, and programs to ensure PES students have sufficient access to pre-requisite courses and other academic opportunities.
+ Supervise access for PES students to residential learning communities and research exploration seminars.
+ Partner closely with the PES leadership team to lead strategy around:
+ Academic and administrative policies and processes
+ Enrollment management, recruitment, and communications
+ PES curriculum, including course proposal submission process, staff stipends, and course assessments for First Year Exploration (FYXP) courses
+ Student success initiatives
+ PES advising services
+ Attend and support PES recruitment and welcome events
+ Maintain a visible and engaged presence with the PES staff, visiting staff meetings and meeting with new hires
Residential Learning Communities (RLCs):
In partnership with Student Life, the AVPUAE will oversee OUE's commitment to the collaborative development and assessment of cohesive Residential Learning Community models across schools and colleges, with an eye to better supporting the 40% of students who are not currently engaged in a Residential Learning Community (RLC). This role aims to improve accessibility and flexibility in the model, engaging more first-year undergraduate students.
+ Implementation of Residential Learning Community (RLC) model
+ Implement an RLC model that is cohesive across schools and colleges, and is accessible to all students, while allowing flexibility for S/C/P
+ Collaborate with Student Affairs and Residential Life on housing and co-curricular integration
+ Recruiting and Marketing impacts
+ Collaborate with Student Life, Strategic Relations and Enrollment Management to effectively apply a strategic approach and communication tools to market first year programming to potential, incoming and currently enrolled students
Curricular Development, Implementation, Assessment and Alignment:
The AVPUAE will collaborate on campus-wide implementation of first-year colloquia/seminars, scaffolding learning outcomes with the Common Curriculum.
+ Development: Collaborate with schools and colleges on the creation of campus-wide one-credit research exploration seminar for all first year and transfer students.
+ Implementation: Oversee the implementation of a campus-wide one-credit research exploration seminar for all first year and transfer students.
+ Assessment: Provide expertise on assessing the effectiveness of student success academic initiatives and student learning outcomes.
+ Alignment: Oversee the alignment of common learning outcomes with faculty curriculum governance support.

Student Success and Administrative Oversight:
The AVPUAE will support campus-wide retention and early alert initiatives, represent the Office of Undergraduate Education on key committees, and lead personnel and fiscal resources for academic programs, promoting sustainable operations and student persistence.
+ Engage in campus-wide projects aimed at student success. Serve as Office of Undergraduate Education representative to the First Year Experience Committee, Assessment Steering Committee and other committees that may be created to support student success.
+ Serve as Office of Undergraduate Education representative on campus-wide Early Alert Program: Collaborate with units, including schools and colleges, Student Life, the Registrar's Office, Enrollment Management, Data Analytics, and Continuing Education to develop and implement processes to act on insights derived from predictive analytics and other student data sources.
+ Work with the OUE leadership to use persistence data for a student success strategy for undergraduates, evaluating first and second-year programs. Coordinate data-driven student success initiatives with other assistant/associate vice provosts in the Office of Undergraduate Education.
+ Supervise the PES and RLC FTEs including performance management, supervision, and training and coaching of staff reporting to the AVPUAE.
+ In collaboration with the dean, provide strategic oversight of budget in programs reporting to the AVPUAE.
+ Engage in planning to make the most of financial resources for efficient and balanced staffing and operations.
OUE Support:
+ Represent OUE at events as needed.
+ Serve as a resource to OUE colleagues particularly related to academic support programs and new student success initiatives.

What We Require
+ Completed master's degree in higher education administration or related field.
+ 6+ years of progressively responsible professional experience in administrative operations management in a complex higher education setting, including supervision of professional staff, leadership/administration of a unit/department, and management of fiscal resources.
