    UPMC Hamot is hiring a Professional Staff Nurse to join the Women's Hospital OR!

     

    Operating Room nurses play a vital role in the surgical team. This role is dedicated to intraoperative responsibilities, including preparing and maintaining the sterile field, assisting surgeons as a scrub or circulating nurse, managing surgical instruments and supplies, and ensuring patient safety throughout the procedure. The ideal candidate will demonstrate precision, adaptability, and strong collaboration within a fast-paced surgical environment.

     

    Hours: This position is full-time: two 8-hour shifts, two 12-hour shifts, occasional 3 rd shifts and rotating holidays

    Purpose: The Professional Staff Nurse OR is a Registered Nurse who plays a key role in delivering high-quality patient care. This role involves setting care standards and maintaining accountability for nursing practices. The nurse manages care for patients and their families using independent judgment, effective communication, and collaboration with the healthcare team. As a leader and partner in care, the nurse builds strong relationships with physicians, other providers, patients, and families to achieve optimal outcomes. The position reflects a commitment to both the nursing profession and the broader community, emphasizing teamwork, compassion, and excellence throughout the continuum of care.

    Responsibilities:

    + Demonstrates accountability for professional development that improves the quality of professional practice and patient care.

    + Actively participates in unit-based shared governance, goal setting, and supports change and transition processes to improve care and the practice environment.

    + Serves as a highly engaged and full partner on the care team and responds willingly to team member needs for assistance and collaboration.

    + Participates in work that improves patient care and the professional practice environment.

    + Adapts to change and demonstrates flexibility throughout the change process.

    + Applies the nursing process within the framework of Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment.

    + Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care based on unit-specific needs

    + Understands growth and development across the lifespan to assess and meet age-specific patient requirements

    + One to two years of experience; BSN preferred

    + Builds positive, caring relationships with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams

    + Works effectively in complex environments with changing priorities and specialized equipment

    + Applies good clinical judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving in patient care

    + Leads others in applying the nursing process

    + Possesses mobility, visual/manual dexterity, and physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning

    + UPMC offers flexible scheduling options including night/weekend programs with premium pay

    + Nurses must have at least 6 months of experience to qualify for special shift programs

    + Orientation for special programs may occur during regular business hours

    + Interested candidates should notify their recruiter during the interview process

    + Performs scrub role (required for RNs hired on or after July 1, 2023)

    + Meets system-wide competencies and performs other duties as assignedLicensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

    + Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

    + Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)

    + Graduate nurses must complete licensure examination within SIX MONTHS of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first. Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examination within 6 months of their start date or they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.

    + UPMC approved national certification preferred.

    *Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
