    Description

    SUMMARY:

    Inspects, maintains, packs and adjusts aircrew flight equipment such as flight helmets, oxygen masks, parachutes, flotation devices, survival kits, helmet mounted devices, aircrew night vision and other ocular systems, anti-G garments, aircrew eye and respiratory protective equipment, chemical biological protective oxygen masks and overalls, and other types of AFE and aircrew chemical defense systems. Repairs fabric and rubber components, including protective clothing, thermal radiation barriers, flotation equipment, and various parachutes. Evaluates problems and determines feasibility of repair or replacement related to inspecting and repairing fabric, Rubber equipment, and parachutes. Evaluates work orders for fabrication of authorized items.

     

    Installs and removes aircraft-installed AFE. Uses various types of test equipment such as altimeters, oxygen testers, leakage testers, radio testers, and other types of testers to conduct reliability testing on AFE and ACDE. Maintains inspection and accountability documentation on AFE issued to air crews or preposition on aircraft. May be proficient in AFE inspection and maintenance procedures; parachute construction; effects on temperature and humidity on parachutes and other fabrics; characteristics of rubberized items; solvent, heat and pressure effects on rubber; proper handling, use and disposal of hazardous waste, materials, and pyrotechnics; aircrew flight and chemical defense equipment inspections, fitting, and maintenance procedures; supply procedures; principles of contamination control.

     

    Must also be proficient in related technical information, policies, procedures, techniques, and equipment. Will be required to become proficient in basic helicopter ground handling procedures such as towing, jacking and refuel/defuel and be able to perform these tasks on an as needed basis.

    MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:

    Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

    + Aircrew Flight Equipment inspections - 70%

    + Training Aircrews - 5%

    + Research/Supply/Parts - 5%

    + Ground Support Equipment operations/maintenance - 5%

    + TDY travel - 15%

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    + AFE Maintenance. Ensure that all aircrew flight equipment employees, prior to starting work, must be a graduate of the Aircrew Flight Equipment (AFSC 1P0X1), the prior Aircrew Life Support (AFSC 1T1X1) and/or Survival Equipment (AFSC 2A7X4) technical training courses (or equivalent), sister-service equivalent courses, or FAA certified equivalent background

    + Certified AFE personnel must have at least 1 years’ experience within the last 5 years.

    + Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD secret security clearance.

    + USAF or military service equivalent in Aircrew Flight Equipment

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is:

    + Exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

    + CLIMBING - Ascending or descending using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized (onto or off of helicopter)

    + HANDLING - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands. Fingers are involved only to the extent that they are an extension of the hand (required for numerous tasks.)

    + EXPOSURE TO WEATHER - Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather (while conducting exterior ramp operations)

    + NOISE - Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds or a pitch or level sufficient to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss (while conducting exterior ramp operations)

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    + Candidates may work in and around aircraft with loud noises.
