    The** **_UW Dermatologic Surgery Clinic_** **has an outstanding opportunity for a Histotechnologist (Per Diem/On-Call, Day Shifts).

     

    The mission of the Dermatology Department is to provide outstanding patient care, train and mentor future leaders in dermatology and advance dermatologic knowledge. The Dermatology Division is affiliated with University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Harborview Medical Center, Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center and VA Puget Sound Health Care System. There are two postdoctoral training programs in Dermatology, Dermatology Residency Program and Procedural Dermatology Fellowship Program. Dermatology faculty conduct basic research and clinical trials, provide patient care and participate in the training of medical students, residents and fellows.

     

    Under general direction, the Histotechnologist will perform complex histologic procedures under general direction of the Mohs Surgeon including cutting and histological processing of frozen biopsy sections for diagnostic procedures in a clinical setting. The work requires a high degree of skill and ability to work independently.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

    + Process, embed, section, and stain tissue specimens for examination by the Mohs surgeon

    + Perform and optimize advanced histological staining techniques crucial for Mohs’s surgery such as Silver stain, Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) Staining, Toluidine Blue Staining and Immunohistolochemical (IHC) staining techniques

    + Work in collaboration with Mohs surgeon and surgical teams on timely processing and examination of specimens

    + Innovate and refine histological methodologies by adapting new procedures and formulating specialized staining reagents, dyes, and solutions tailored to a diverse range of tissue types, such as skin, cartilage, and conjunctiva, while implementing stringent quality control measures to maintain reagent efficacy and consistency.

    + Implement, monitor, and perform quality control of specimens; maintain and record all quality control and quality assurance methods in accordance with CLIA and WA State Department of Health.

    + Determine disposition of improperly handled specimens; identify problems, take corrective action, notify supervisor of action taken and monitor follow-up solutions;

    + Operate and maintain laboratory instruments in partnership with UW Medicine Scientific Instruments, including cryostats and stain processors, for precise sectioning of fresh tissue specimens.

    + Analyze and determine cause(s) of instrument malfunction, take corrective action and monitor follow-up

    + Evaluate new products and instruments

    + Guide, instruct and orient pathologists, residents and other lab members on complex histologic procedures.

    + Perform related duties as required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Certified as a Histotechnologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists OR certified as a Histologic Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists AND three years of experience in a clinical or research laboratory.

     

    Experience/education which demonstrates comparable skills may substitute for the certification requirement.

     

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience working in a Mohs laboratory in a dermatologic surgery clinic setting

     

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $31.23 hourly

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $44.69 hourly
