Description:

This is first-line supervisory or managerial law enforcement work at a University campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, employees enforce the laws of the State and the United States Government. Employees have law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. Work involves supervision and/or management of a unit of officers or other Departmental personnel in their responses to routine calls, emergencies, and other law enforcement services provided. Employees evaluate appropriateness of officer responses; designate assignments; direct needed resources; and interpret laws, ordinances, and Department policies and procedures. Duties may include orientation and training of officers, inspections of officers and/or other Departmental personnel on a shift, conducting pre-shift briefings, review of all reports and investigations accomplished during a shift, activity coordination, discipline, conducting performance reviews, and providing input concerning operational planning.

•Upon hire, the relevant Police Supervisor job classification and starting salary will be assigned based on the successful candidate’s prior law enforcement experience as follows:

• Individuals who have not yet served at the rank of Police Supervisor are hired as a Police Supervisor I

• Individuals who have served as a Police Supervisor or higher rank for a minimum of 3 years are hired as a Police Supervisor II

• Individuals who have served as a Police Supervisor or higher rank for a minimum of 6 years are hired as a Police Supervisor III

UPD fully recognizes prior law enforcement experience for lateral hires from outside agencies. A hiring salary commensurate with the relevant assigned level will be determined within the overall salary range of the Police Supervisor job series ($61,866 – $92,801).”

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

Requirements:

A minimum of an associate degree (or 60 hours of college credit)

4 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe or certification for out of state lateral hires.

Three years experience as a Police Supervisor with the agency. At the discretion of the campus hiring authority, document service as a sworn law enforcement officer at a substantially equivalent classification (rank) may be accepted for lateral hires from outside agencies.
