    Job Summary

    The Program in Computing for the Arts and Sciences is seeking to hire two (2) GSI in the winter 2026 term to lead concurrent project/studio-work and grade assignments for COMPFOR 121.

    Course Description

    COMPFOR 121 - Computing for Expression:

    Computing provides new ways for humans to express themselves, interact, and communicate. Students in this course study the ways in which computing has been used to create and express, and then learn how to use computation to create pictures, sounds, videogames, language, and web pages. They will learn how to generate and control these modalities through user interactivity in order to blend these in video games and web pages. Students will learn computational concepts and write programs with a focus on purpose and meaning.

    Responsibilities*

    The course will be composed of two weekly 90-minute sessions that include lecture and project/studio work. All GSIs are required to attend the lecture and concurrent project/studio work. Verify your own course schedule against LSA Course Guide for the course to which you are applying as a GSI. All GSIs are required to attend the lecture and lab times as posted. Note that both lecture and studio sessions are scheduled as in-person instruction.

     

    + Hold at least 4 office hours each week.

    + Grade assignments, per lead faculty instruction.

    + Meet weekly with the lead instructor, and respond promptly to emails.

    + Additional items listed in fraction calculation form

    Required Qualifications*

    + Enrolled in good standing as a graduate student at the University of Michigan.

    + Available to attend the scheduled lecture times as outlined in the Job Responsibilities above.

    + Have previously taken these courses or equivalent courses, and have demonstrated expertise and interest in the subject area.

    + Experience with Canvas.

    + If the language of instruction at a student's undergraduate institution was not English, they must be evaluated by theEnglish Language Institute (https://lsa.umich.edu/eli) (ELI) for English proficiency and either pass theGSI-OET (https://michiganassessment.org/michigan-tests/gsi-oet/) or have this test waived by the ELI before they can be eligible for a GSI appointment in LSA.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Previous experience teaching LSA courses is desired.

    + Previous experience teaching courses in computing is desired

    + Experience with creative or artistic practice, in any medium, is desired

    + Previous experience as a GSI is desired

    + LSA student enrolled in a graduate program

     

    Modes of Work

    Decision Making Process

    Selection Process

     

    Applications are reviewed, and decisions made, based on each applicant's knowledge, experience, and past teaching record. Preferential consideration will be given to applicants:

     

    + with relevant academic preparation for teaching the course material

    + with previous experience teaching courses in computing to LSA, or liberal arts, students

    + whose field of study has relevance to computing.

    + *who are LSA graduate students
