A Glimpse of the Job
The Ship Environmental Steward is a member of the ship's crew and is employed by the Texas A&M Maritime Academy. This role is crucial for supporting the practical training of future maritime professionals, specifically Third Mates and Third Assistant Engineers. The Ship Steward also plays a vital part in maintaining the vessel's operational readiness, ensuring it remains in ROS-5 status for potential active service outside of its training duties. The Ship Steward is a day worker in the deck department, typically working a standard eight-hour day while the ship is at sea or in port. This position is under the direct supervision of the ship's licensed officers and Boatswain. Although the role is a day-worker position, the incumbent must be available to be called out at any time for operational needs.
Essential Duties/Tasks
+ Ship Sanitation - The Ship Steward responsible for the daily cleaning, sanitation, waste management, sanitation equipment, and laundry services. This primarily involves the general maintenance, repair, and sanitation of the ship's public and deck spaces. The Ship Steward will oversee cadets in the utility/maintenance section or additional permanent or temporary crew involved in the cleanliness, sanitation, waste management and laundry management of the ship’s hotel services. Ship Steward must have a working knowledge of cleaning, sweeping, scrubbing, and proper garbage disposal. The Ship Steward is also responsible for ensuring all cleaning stations are outfitted with required gear and consumables and that an adequate supply is maintained to restock as necessary.
+ Compliance, Instruction, and Other - The incumbent is expected to be thoroughly familiar with all types of hazardous materials (HAZMAT) used onboard, including their proper stowage, segregation, and disposal. Overall, the Ship Steward is responsible for understanding and complying with all shipboard safety regulations, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and demonstrating a strong working knowledge of shipboard terminology, tools, and rigging procedures. Required Education and Experience
+ High School diploma or equivalent GED
+ At least one year in a custodial/housekeeping capacity
Required Licenses and Certifications
+ U.S. Regular Passport or ability to obtain
+ Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC)
+ United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC), or ability to obtain within 90 days with the following endorsement(s): Ordinary Seaman (OS)
+ USCG Medical Certificate w/o limitations.
Preferred Qualifications
+ 2 years shipboard experience in Steward or Deck Department Supervisor/team lead experience Able Seafarer Unlimited (or higher) Rating forming part of a navigational watch (RFPNW)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Knowledge of shipboard safety management systems.
+ Knowledge of Shipboard sanitation practices common to the industry or equivalent shoreside institutions.
+ Related teaching / instructional experience or related supervisory experience
Additional Information
Machines or equipment used in the performance of essential duties
+ Safety and protective gear. Floor care and waste management equipment. cleaning and sanitation chemicals.
Physical Requirements
+ All seafarers must pass a comprehensive medical examination to get a medical certificate, which confirms their fitness for duty and is required by organizations like the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). Essential physical requirements include the strength and endurance to lift equipment weighing 50 lbs. or more, the ability to safely navigate a constantly moving vessel, and the mobility to climb multiple ladders and enter confined spaces. Overall, a mariner must be prepared to perform all job functions safely and effectively in a challenging and often isolated environment.

+ This position is security sensitive
+ This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures
+ All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements
+ Must pass a USCG/DOT drug test prior to employment and participate in the University's random drug test program.
+ Willing to work extended duty days to include overnight stays, weekends and holidays. Able to report on short notice.
+ This position is defined as Critical Infrastructure and requires completion of a background check prior to employment.
+ Ability to spend at least 3 months at sea and all ship activations.
