    The State Highway Administration's (SHA) Office of Traffic and Safety (Anne Arundel County) is currently recruiting for a Transporation Engineer (Transportation Engineer III) position. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. All eligible candidates must meet the minimum and selective qualifications by the closing date. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only.     Nature of Work : This position is within the Traffic Engineering Design Division (TEDD) and serves as a Structures Engineer responsible for the design of traffic control devices (TCDs). Responsibilities include both office-based and field work. The position supports the Team Leader in managing design and asset management programs, which encompass field inspections, shop drawing reviews, and the development of standards for various traffic control devices. These devices include, but are not limited to, traffic signal structures, sign structures, roadway lighting systems, breakaway and non-breakaway signposts, foundation designs, and other minor structural elements.

     

    This position reports directly to the Team Leader. The incumbent in this position will manage, design, and coordinate engineering efforts for TCDs statewide, while also overseeing the work of design consultants. The role involves managing multiple projects originating both within TEDD and from external SHA offices such as District Offices, the Office of Structures, and the Office of Highway Development.

    Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education : Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.

     

    Experience: Two (2) years of experience in professional engineering.

     

    Selective Qualification: One (1) year of the required experience must have involved in construction, traffic design, transportation engineering, maintenance and/or highway engineering .

     

    *This statement contains a selective qualification, which is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification. Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill or ability).

    Preferred Qualification:

    The ideal candidate should possess the following:

    + Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering from accredited university or foreign equivalency (WES or NCEES).

    + Possession of an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) or Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) certificate.

    + Knowledge of, and experience applying, professional engineering principles, practices, and methodologies.

    + Ability to learn and apply structural design principles for traffic control devices (TCDs).

    + Proficiency with engineering-related computer applications (e.g., MicroStation, STAAD.Pro, and LPile).

    + Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, exercise initiative and sound judgment, and comply with applicable laws, regulations, and agency policies.

    + Willingness and ability to assume increasingly complex responsibilities over time.

    + Effective verbal and written communication skills.

    + Strong customer service orientation.

    + Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

    + Ability to perform field inspections.

    Notes:

    1. Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.

    2. Possession of a master’s degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

    3. Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the state of Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.

    Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland .
