Determines the medical necessity of proposed admission using InterQual, referral to Physician Advisor, and/or use of clinical judgment, the purpose of which is not only to determine medical necessity of admission but also to work to decompress Emergency Department Census real time. In addition, role includes coordination of swift discharge plan to move patient in the ED to the appropriate level of care given clinical presentation as Medical Screening Exam is performed by ED provider staff.

• Conduct level of care determinations through the use of InterQual Criteria
• Interdisciplinary communication regarding Admission v. Observation Unit patient candidacy
• Provider education regarding the importance of medical documentation to support Admissions
• Incorporation of financial advisement into Admission process
• Effective Discharge Planning to promote patient flow and reduce ED Readmissions
• Facilitate Interfacility and Outside Hospital Transfers
• Compliance with EMTALA and other Federal Regulatory Requirements (e.g. 3 Midnight Rule)
• Observation Unit Coverage after hours for discharge planning and Inpatient “flips.”
