    Ast/Asc Professor - Fixed Term

    Position Summary

    Reporting to the Asst. Dean of Clinical Experiences, this half-time basic science educator position focuses on educational work in support of medical student learning at our East Lansing Campus.

    Job Responsibilities

    60% Direct Teaching and Related Activities

     

    The basic science educator will engage with students in medium and larger groups (generally 25-100 students in size), teaching content related to biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology. Our curriculum focuses on active learning and is structured to be integrative across the varied basic science disciplines and to include clinical context. Coordination will be required to ensure equivalent content is delivered in both the Grand Rapids and East Lansing campuses.

     

    In addition, teaching modalities will include recorded videos or modules for asynchronous use by students, preparation of written answers to student questions on confusing topics, and intermittent individual engagement with students around challenging topic areas.

     

    20% Faculty Development

     

    The basic science educator will participate in faculty development with other faculty focused on basic science education in the M.D. program. This includes participating in faculty development led by others and may also including presenting faculty development to basic science or clinician faculty colleagues.

     

    20% Curriculum Development and Improvement Efforts

     

    The basic science educator will collaborate with other faculty in the creation or revision of content and materials to support the educational program. This will include use of developed curricular guidance documents and reference materials to organize and create learning objectives, activities, and/or assessments.

    Required Degree

    Doctorate

    Minimum Requirements

    The successful candidate will have a terminal degree including PhD or equivalent in biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, or a related field; teaching experience with multiple educational modalities; experience working with faculty teams; and demonstrated effectiveness working with students at a variety of performance levels.

    Desired Qualifications

    Experience in curriculum design or interventions to support student success are desirable. Academic department and rank will be determined based upon qualifications and experience.
