Continuing Education Teacher - Supplemental Instruction and Writing Specialist
FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Murphy Institute’s LEAP to Teacher (LTT) Program at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) is a collaborative initiative between SLU and seven CUNY colleges. The program provides comprehensive support services to school and daycare professionals, helping them pursue higher education and advance their careers in teaching and related fields.
We are seeking a **Supplemental Instruction and Writing Specialist** to support LTT students enrolled in education courses at the College of Staten Island (CSI). This role is ideal for a passionate educator with strong writing and instructional skills, committed to student success.
Reporting to the **Director of Worker Education and Workforce Development** , the Specialist will serve as an Embedded Supplemental Instruction (SI) leader and Writing support in designated courses, attend class sessions and facilitate group SI sessions, provide individualized academic support to students and collaborate closely with faculty to align support with course objectives.
Key Responsibilities
+ Guide students through all stages of academic literature reviews, including database searches, APA citation formatting, and final review composition.
+ Support students in developing effective lesson plans and provide constructive feedback on writing assignments.
+ Facilitate out-of-class tutoring sessions to reinforce course content and enhance student success.
+ Design and lead workshops focused on writing improvement and research skills.
+ Help students identify and address writing challenges, encouraging independent editing and revision.
+ Collaborate with faculty to understand course content and identify students needing additional support.
+ Conduct pre- and post-assessments using rubrics to measure writing progress and track student support sessions and maintain accurate data records. Enter data in the program database and send biweekly support.
+ Participate in team meetings, professional development activities, and program coordination.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’sdegreerequired.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Master’s degree or Enrollment in a Ph.D.stronglypreferred.
+ Experience supporting writers from diverse backgrounds and experience assisting students with master's theses or dissertations.
+ Familiarity with academic research databases and literature review processes and Proficiency in APA latest edition formatting.
+ Background in “Writing Across the Curriculum” or Writing Center environments.
+ Experience in tutoring, teaching, or leading small group workshops.
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
+ Proficiency with online platforms such as Zoom, Google Docs, and Blackboard.
+ Availability to work evenings andweekends.
COMPENSATION
Starting at $52 to $65 per hour for 10—15 hours per week.
