Overview
The Radiologic Technologist performs diagnostic imaging procedures in accordance with physician orders, established protocols, and regulatory standards. This role is responsible for operating imaging equipment, preparing and positioning patients, administering contrast agents, ensuring quality imaging, and supporting patient care across all areas of the hospital. The technologist demonstrates clinical expertise, critical thinking, and independent judgment in providing high-quality imaging services for patients of all ages and populations.
Responsibilities
* Operates imaging equipment while performing prescribed procedures.
* Reviews patient medical records for relevant history and clinical information.
* Explains procedures, transfers patients safely to imaging tables, and positions them according to protocol.
* Administers contrast media as prescribed by the radiologist (oral, intravenous, urethral, or rectal routes).
* Recognizes and appropriately responds to hypersensitivity or allergic reactions.
* Selects proper exposure techniques and ensures adherence to imaging protocols.
* Reviews studies for quality, documents any issues, and alerts radiologist for further instructions if needed.
* Performs radiologic procedures requiring advanced technical skills, including requests from specialized clinics.
* Operates associated computer systems (RIS, PACS, modality software) to produce, process, optimize, and archive imaging data.
* Conducts and documents quality control procedures on imaging and ancillary equipment at designated intervals to ensure compliance with CMS and federal standards.
* Organizes daily workflow, prioritizes exams, and responds to emergencies.
* Provides instruction to medical staff, orients new technologists, and mentor’s student technologists.
* Maintains a second professional registry if required for section certifications and federal inspections.
* Performs venipuncture, enema tip, or urologic catheter placement as appropriate.
* Maintains proficiency in all Code designations and demonstrates appropriate emergency response.
* Demonstrates competency in specialized imaging, including:
* Fluoroscopy: musculoskeletal, neuro, GI/GU procedures
* Portable Imaging: inpatient units, ED trauma, OR (portable, C-arm, O-arm)
* Orthopedic protocols and specialized studies
* Outpatient Imaging
* Imaging for suspected child abuse and fetal demise
* Ensures compassionate patient care, professionalism, and compliance with hospital policies and safety standards.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
* Graduate of an American Medical Association (AMA) approved allied health program specific to radiologic technology.
Experience:
* Must be able to perform duties independently with minimal supervision.
* Proficiency with Radiology Information Systems (RIS), PACS, and related hospital systems.
Licensure/Certification:
* Current professional registry with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (or registry eligible where applicable).
* Licensed by the New Hampshire Board of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy.
* Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
* Additional registries or certifications as required by modality or section.
Other Requirements:
* Must be able and willing to work on-call, weekends, holidays, and variable shifts.
* Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
