    Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician / Medical Technologist

    Job Description

    The Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist is responsible for performing a wide range of laboratory tasks to support patient care, particularly in an oncology setting. This role involves specimen handling, processing, and analysis, as well as maintaining laboratory equipment and adhering to quality control standards. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of cancer patients while gaining unique experience in a specialized laboratory environment.

    Responsibilities

    + Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.

    + Send specimens to reference laboratories for testing not performed in-house.

    + Process incoming orders for lab testing, including reference laboratory specimens.

    + Perform specimen analysis of all Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology specimens.

    + Maintain and operate all laboratory equipment.

    + Perform daily, weekly, and monthly instrument maintenance.

    + Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies and document all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance.

    + Record proper lot numbers of all controls, calibrators, and reagents.

    + Participate in proficiency testing by performing sample analysis and reporting results at least once a year.

    + Prepare peripheral blood smear and perform a complete WBC differential.

    + Perform microscopic examination of urinary sediment and record results on appropriate worksheet and computer system, performing file maintenance.

    + Process specimens for send-out testing.

    + Follow laboratory policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.

    + Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or notify a supervisor.

    + Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance standards.

    + Verify all critical results and document with accurate follow-up.

    + Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies and ensure that all supplies are viable before using them in patient testing.

    + Prepare reagents, stains, and other chemical solutions as needed.

    + Restock the laboratory area as needed.

    + Process in-house and incoming results for charting.

    + Chart patient results in a timely manner as needed.

    Essential Skills

    + Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist by the Board of Registry of American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) required.

    + Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program, typically resulting in an associate degree.

     

    Additional Skills & Qualifications

     

    + ASCP/AMT Certification

    + 3-5 years of experience preferred

    + Generalist, CLIA, Medical Technologist, MLT experience

    Work Environment

    The work schedule is Monday through Friday, with start times between 7am-9am and end times between 3:30pm-5:30pm. There are no weekend or night shifts required. Travel to five other locations may be required to fill in as needed. This role provides meaningful work with cancer patients, offering a unique opportunity to positively impact their lives during a challenging time.

    This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Suffolk, Virginia.

    Pay and Benefits

    The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr.
