We are delighted to announce an opening for a highly skilled and motivated individual to work as a Junior Research Scientist in the NYU Stern Finance group. This is a full time predoctoral research assistant position for a period of at least one year, ideally two, beginning on or before July, 2026. The job will entail close collaboration in all stages of the research process on new and ongoing empirical projects in the fields of macroeconomics, financial economics, risk & insurance, and climate finance.
This position offers the opportunity to gain exposure to and training in a broad set of economic research topics and methodologies before pursuing a PhD in economics. RAs will gain valuable skills in analyzing large data sets, empirical analysis, and hands-on programming, with an emphasis on textual analysis using LLMs. As a result, the position is most beneficial for students planning to pursue a PhD or advanced Master’s program in Economics, Finance or a related field.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $51,700-$61,500. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
The ideal candidate should (i) have completed a 4-year undergraduate degree majoring in Economics, or undertaken comparable Economics coursework; (ii) have a strong quantitative background; (iii) have statistical/scientific programming experience, especially in R and/or Python; (iv) be able to work independently to solve problems.
Application is via Interfolio. We ask that you upload the following documents:
+ One-page cover letter describing your relevant coursework and/or research experience, programming background, future academic plans, and when you are available to begin work.
+ CV.
+ Academic transcript (unofficial is fine).
+ Writing sample (any academic paper that you think reflects your research ability).
+ Two references.
+ Optional: a coding sample.
Application review will occur on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Short-listed applicants will be asked to complete an interview and a technical exercise to demonstrate their qualifications.
