Summary:
As a Product Design Engineer Intern at Meta Reality Labs, you will help design, prototype, and validate next-generation consumer products, including mixed reality devices, augmented reality devices, and wearable technology. You will gain hands-on experience in user-centered design, iterative prototyping, and cross-functional collaboration, developing a comprehensive understanding of the product design process, manufacturing, and validation. We are seeking inquisitive learners with effective communication skills who can creatively apply mechanical engineering principles to solve complex problems.Internships are twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks long.
Required Skills:
Product Design Engineer Intern Responsibilities:
1. Brainstorm and design innovative concepts for consumer hardware, balancing performance, function, ergonomics, and aesthetics
2. Develop and refine 3D CAD models and 2D drawings using NX
3. Prototype and iterate on mechanical modules and systems (e.g., enclosures, closure mechanisms, thermal solutions, dynamic components)
4. Collaborate with industrial designers, user interface teams, and cross-functional engineering teams (electrical, optical, manufacturing, reliability, etc.) to ensure design feasibility and manufacturability
5. Interact with vendors and suppliers to produce prototypes and ensure designs are manufacturable at scale
6. Conduct engineering analysis (free body diagrams, weight/tolerance/statistical analysis) and validate designs through data-driven testing (thermal, mechanical, environmental)
7. Assess concepts for user experience, comfort, reliability, and gather user feedback to inform design decisions

8. Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Product Design Engineering, or a related field
9. Experience with 3D CAD software
10. Proficiency in prototyping and evaluating mechanical designs (3D printing, CNC, laser cutting, etc.)
11. Familiarity with mass production manufacturing methods (injection molding, die casting, sheet metal, CNC)
12. Fundamental knowledge of material properties for plastics and metals
13. Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

14. Intent to return to the degree program after the completion of the internship/co-op
15. Experience in consumer electronic product design
16. Knowledge of optical systems and/or wrist wearable design
17. Experience with simulation analysis (structural, thermal), FEA, DFM, DFA, FA, DOE creation, and/or GD&T
18. Experience with 3D CAD software with NX, SolidWorks, Creo, or CATIA
19. Effective communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
Public Compensation:
$6,688/month to $11,467/month + benefits
