    Position Summary

    RSI is recruiting for a Graduate Intern – Applied Studies and Technology (AS&T) who willassist with environmental research and laboratory activities being conducted under the Applied Studies and Technology Educational Collaboration initiative at DOE Office of Legacy Management (DOE LM) sites.This graduate intern, with a geochemistry focus, is specifically needed to support the solid-phase characterization of tailings collected from the Rifle, Colorado, Disposal Site. Additional work will include geochemical modeling of likely reactions occurring within the disposal cell based on pore water, solid phase, and column data.

    **Location(s):** Westminster, CO

    **Status:** Part-Time – Temporary

    **FLSA:** Non-Exempt

    **Hiring Range:** $21.00/hour to $25.00/hour.(The anticipated starting salary is based on the posted minimum requirements for this position. The offered salary will be based upon the selected applicant’s education, training, and experience.)

     

    This position is required to travel 0-5% of the time.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    + Analyze tailings from the Rifle disposal cell using standard characterization techniques. These could include, but are not limited to scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. Interpret and summarize the data.

    + Interpret and summarize prior tailings pore water and column data to develop the geochemical reactions that are occurring within the Rifle tailings.

    + Develop a conceptual model and use geochemical modeling to explain the reactions occurring within the Rifle tailings.

    + Develop a predictive geochemical model for likely reactions that would occur within extraction wells and below the bottom of the tailings.

    + Other duties as assigned.

    Required Education and Years of Relevant Experience

    + Undergraduate degree inGeology, Geochemistry, Hydrogeology, Chemistry,Physicsor a relatedfield.

    + Some background in geochemistry preferred.

    + No minimum years of relevant experience required.

    Licenses and Certifications

    + Valid Driver’s License.

    + No professional certification required.

    Required Skills and Abilities

    + Microsoft office including but not limited to Excel and Word.

    + Some experience in geochemical modeling (i.e., PHREEQC).

    + Some experience in solid-phase tailings characterization.

    Clearance and Health Requirements

    + Criminal Background Check

    + Pre-placement Drug Screening

    + Fit for Duty Test (if applicable)

     

    Essential Physical Requirements

     

    Medium: Work involves moving objects by exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an above-negligible amount and up to 10 pounds constantly. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for light work.
