    Banner Health is seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking physician executive to serve as Chief Executive Officer of the Banner University Medical Group (BUMG). This is a pivotal leadership role for a seasoned clinical leader with a proven track record of progressive responsibility and impact in academic medicine.

     

    Reporting to the President of Banner Academic Delivery, the CEO will oversee a robust academic medical group of providers across three hospitals and 26 clinical locations. The CEO will serve as a key member of Banner Health’s system-wide clinical leadership team. In this role, the CEO will collaborate closely with the CEOs of Banner University Medical Center – Phoenix and Tucson, the University of Arizona College of Medicine Dean and Department Chairs, and other operational and clinical leaders. The successful candidate will bring strategic vision, operational discipline, and a deep commitment to clinical excellence.

    Banner University Medical Group is our nonprofit faculty practice plan associated with the University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine in Phoenix and Tucson. Our 1,100-plus clinicians provide primary and specialty care to patients at highly ranked Banner - University Medical Centers and dozens of clinics while providing mentorship to more than 1,200 residents and fellows.     POSITION SUMMARY

    This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating the operations within Banner University Medical Group that include clinics, health centers, hospitals, health plans, and/or physician networks, ancillary care networks, sub-acute care networks to ensure the highest quality patient services and financial performance. This position reports to the President of the Banner – University Medicine Division and the AMC. Specific responsibilities include establishing and achieving long-range goals, monitoring and achieving financial outcomes, and providing leadership to direct reports. This position is highly visible across the organization and participates in system-level leadership activities involving the development and implementation of policies and practices; development and management of growth and improvement plans; efficient utilization of resources; acquisition of technology; and program development.

     

    This position has leadership accountability for medical group operations, working with system support services to optimize system synergy and pursue system wide solutions and approaches where appropriate. This position is a key member of corporate senior leadership, providing expertise, information and advice for determining strategy, policy, goals, initiatives and operational performance. This position ensures the initiatives and strategies of the company are operationalized throughout the region and that results meet customer service, physician relations, workforce and financial goals and objectives as developed by the Board of Directors and senior corporate management. The incumbent is a role model for leadership, service excellence and corporate compliance. This position serves as a change agent and drives culture, supporting and modeling a service-oriented, consumer-centric culture, focused on patient safety and the overall patient experience. This position serves as the principal link between hospital and medical group activities and the community, local Boards, and medical staff.

    CORE FUNCTIONS

    1. Develops and implements strategies to achieve the desired business outcomes of adequate return on investment, capital development, growth, and delivery of high quality service to customers. These strategies may include, but are not limited to, efforts to improve service delivery and clinical quality, increase revenues, decrease costs, develop new business models, and continue building the healthcare delivery system.

    2. Ensures the integration of new, expanded operations and services within Banner University Medical Group by providing leadership that maximizes each executive’s contributions and assures timely decision-making reflective of the mission, vision and values of the system.

    3. Develops and monitors financial and clinical performance outcomes to assure objectives are met, as established by corporate leadership and the Board of Directors. Maintains an effective budgeting and capital planning discipline in conjunction with community operating management to ensure planned revenues, expenses and profit goals are met.

    4. Maintains an effective internal control environment to ensure that assets are safeguarded, policies and operating procedures followed, necessary controls are effective and efficient, proper compliance with existing laws and regulations achieved, and operations comply with the legal and regulatory parameters in which it operates.

    5. Actively participates in creating an environment of understanding and trust by participating in two-way communication with those we serve, physicians and employees. Promotes and participates in activities and decisions consistent with the creation of the “environment of choice” for customers, physicians and employees.

    6. Holds Banner University Medical Group executives accountable for achieving plans and performance targets. Works with them to identify and resolve issues and problems affecting operations, and provides them with counsel, guidance, direction and encourages the utilization of others with specialized skills and expertise as appropriate. Develops competencies to allow for continued professional growth and to provide the competencies the company needs to support its growth and long-term success.

    7. Serves as a member of the system senior management team and as such, champions and translates system goals and priorities for the medical group. Serve as a mentor for leaders within BUMG, and fosters talent development within the Banner Health organization. Works collaboratively with other members of the Acute Care Delivery, Ambulatory, Human Resources and Finance teams to ensure safety, clinical effectiveness and outstanding clinical operations across the expanse of the BUMG care locations, inclusive of inpatient and outpatient facilities.

    8. The position promotes consistency within the Physician Enterprise while maintaining the unique entity and regional individualism. This position requires the skill to influence management at all levels in the creation of an environment of choice in a fast-paced, growth-oriented healthcare system. Strategies and services must support the company’s mission, vision and values, strategic initiatives and standards of performance. The incumbent will have responsibility for and direct appropriate use of all resources within the areas of operational responsibility to ensure standards are exceeded for service, clinical and financial outcomes required of the position. External customers include community organizations, regulatory agencies, and vendors.

    9. Support and Leadership within the AMC. Ensures and fosters a high level of collaboration within a highly matrixed team to coordinate activities, review work, exchange information, and resolve problems. Continuous communication is needed with the UA Dean and Chairs to ensure that plans are mutually agreed and implemented. Lead the BUMG and BUMC teams to prepare monthly agendas for AMC and all necessary preparation meetings, prioritizing program development and correction actions necessary to promote financial sustainability.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Medical Doctorate or Doctor of Osteopathy Degree required with appropriate Board Certification or qualification and level of expertise typically gained through five years’ experience in clinical practice and a minimum of one-year CMO experience in the relevant setting.

     

    Must be eligible for or hold a current state license to practice medicine and be eligible for medical staff privileges.

     

    Must demonstrate expert-level knowledge and awareness of area of expertise in designated facility, business entity or area and/or experience in which the knowledge, skills, and abilities are directly transferrable. Proven track record of driving successful performance outcomes and accomplishing organizational goals. Must demonstrate skills and business acumen through direct leadership experiences such as: Anticipating and responding to the needs of internal and external customers; managing a budget and financial plans; building partnerships with management, staff, and stakeholders to achieve department goals and objectives; managing problems and situations where uncertainty is inherent; persuading others to adopt a particular stance on an issue; developing and evaluating best practices and emerging trends for organizational applicability and appropriateness; constructing new and innovative solutions for complex and varying problems and situations while considering the larger perspective or context; mentoring and coaching staff by providing open and honest feedback to enhance performance; developing and implementing strategic goals and initiatives that support organizational success; demonstrating excellent human relations, organizational and communication skills; demonstrating a passion about continuously improving and providing high quality care and service excellence to customers, patients, families, employees and/or physicians.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Board Certified American College of Healthcare Executives Fellow (FACHE) credential preferred.
