    SYSTEMS PROTECTION TECHNICIAN (La Crosse, WI)

     

    _Hourly Wage: $39.37-$55.73 | Living radius requirement of 25 air miles of La Crosse Service Center_

     

    The Indentured Apprentice Systems Protection Technician will safely perform or assist in the diagnosis, repair, installation, maintenance, and testing of protection and control systems and high voltage electrical equipment in substations, capacitor stations, generation facilities and switching stations.

    The Impact You'll Make In This Role:

    **ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS** **:** This list is developed to demonstrate the level of duties normally performed by this classification. The list is not an all-encompassing list of duties.

    1. Comply with all established safety rules, company policies and procedures.

    2. Responsible to the supervisor of electrical maintenance for the installation, maintenance, modifications, programming, and testing of power system and control and monitoring systems in substations, capacitor stations, generation facilities, and switching stations.

    3. Responsible for protection and control system commissioning activities and checkout/verification of equipment interfaces to SCADA and EMS systems. Performs final in-service tests after energization and ensures proper operation and system integrity.

    4. Must complete equipment records and documentation related to testing, modification, maintenance, and commissioning as assigned. Note plan discrepancies and suggest necessary corrections; verify print accuracy, equipment operation and proper installation of control and other circuits. Makes necessary modifications to prints, relay settings and other documentation to reflect as built.

    5. Perform a wide variety of precision tests using specialized hand tools and electrical and electronic test equipment including but not limited to multimeters, phase angle meters, frequency meters, high speed recorders and variable voltage/current sources.

    6. Perform or assist with installation, upgrades, maintenance, modifications, and testing of substation, capacitor station, and switching station apparatuses and metering equipment.

    7. Attend scheduled classroom apprenticeship classes with an end goal of completing a four-year Substation Electrician apprentice program and any other training programs as directed by the supervisor.

    8. Study through guidance of other electricians, the supervisor or others in the department to acquire working knowledge of substations, capacitor stations, motor operated switches, and the operating procedures of all these systems.

    9. Complete monthly Apprentice Training report on a timely basis.

    10. Complete annual switch training and perform switching under the guidance of qualified Electrical Maintenance or Transmission Maintenance switchmen, to become qualified.

    11. Assist in maintaining an adequate and orderly electrical spare parts and equipment inventory.

    12. Assist in maintaining electrical test and safety equipment in proper operating condition.

    13. Assist in maintaining safe, clean, orderly, and hazard-free work areas.

    14. Other duties historically performed by this classification and other related or comparable duties as assigned.

    Your Experience and Expertise:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS** **:

    **Education & Experience:** ( _Internal Candidates)_ - Associate Degree or two (2) year diploma in a directly related field or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.

     

    Applicant must have experience reading schematics, logic diagrams, electrical drawings, technical manuals and knowledge of electrical equipment. Must possess knowledge of the fundamentals of electrical theory, three-phase power, and electrical circuitry. Completion a state-approved System Protection Technician apprenticeship program.

     

    _(External Candidates)_ - Associate Degree or two (2) year diploma in a directly related field or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.

     

    Applicant must have experience reading schematics, logic diagrams, electrical drawings, technical manuals and knowledge of electrical equipment. Must possess knowledge of the fundamentals of electrical theory, three-phase power, and electrical circuitry. Completion a state-approved System Protection Technician apprenticeship program.

     

    **Skills:** Mathematical aptitude and good verbal and written communication skills. Proficient in electronic devices to be able to run computer-based test equipment and program computer-based control devices. Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and associated drawings or diagrams.

    **Licenses and Certifications** : Valid driver’s license. DOT qualified (or become qualified within 45 days). Must be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a tanker endorsement within 6 months of being hired. Must acquire and retain a mobile crane certification with an articulated boom crane.

    **Physical Demands** : Works outdoors with heavy physical endurance, often in inclement weather conditions. Occasionally work at heights of 25 feet or more. Must be able to work in a variety of physically awkward positions. Frequently lifts materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts items that weigh 100 pounds.

     

    Electricians are required to push and pull wire, climb hand-over-hand, and reach overhead to install equipment. Also, will stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, squat, twist upper body, bend, and lie prone while working on various types of installations. Will stand upright for prolonged periods of time (8 hours) in installation work. Must be able to walk carrying tools and equipment. Must be able to distinguish colors. Must be able to operate hand tools, power tools, a variety of motor vehicles and assigned equipment.

     

    **Environmental Demands** : Work in cold and hot temperatures. Traverse uneven ground. Use of a respirator and safety harness equipment.

    **Other Job Characteristics** : Off-duty availability. Moderate to extensive travel as required. Ability to work in a team-oriented, crew environment. Ability to work without close, direct supervision.

    **Primary Living Location** **:** Must relocate/reside within 25 air mile radius of designated work location. (Refer to Letter of Understanding Electrical Maintenance and Transmission Living Distance document effective October 19, 2023.)
