    Department/College Background

The South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute ( STDOI ) was established on October 13, 2014 to be a focus for world-class biomedical research programs at the newly established UTRGV School of Medicine. In 2017, the Department of Human Genetics was formed by the STDOI core faculty, through the authority of the UT System Board of Regents. In September 2025, the Department and Institute transitioned from the School of Medicine to the College of Sciences.

With diverse research efforts in the areas of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, ocular health, psychiatric disease, osteoporosis, and infectious diseases of border health relevance such as Chagas disease and tuberculosis, Human Genetics and the STDOI are working to address the most critical public health problems of the South Texas region. The Department and Institute have state-of-the-art laboratories and genetic research capabilities, including a 12,000 processor computer cluster dedicated to genetic analysis, a biorepository containing tens of thousands of samples collected in the STDOI’s numerous studies of complex disease, and a colony of the unique animal modelMonodelphis domestica.

The Department of Human Genetics at UTRGV focuses on the study of basic principles of genetics and genomics as applied to human disease. Using both experimental models and population-based approaches, the Department has ongoing programs of research in experimental genomics, statistical and population-based genetics, bioinformatics, and translational research.

A large portion of the Department’s research is conducted through the STDOI , a comprehensive interdisciplinary Institute now housed within the UTRGV College of Sciences, which has generated substantial extramural funding for many years.

The Department is home to a PhD program in Human Genetics; the PhD program commenced in the Fall 2022 academic year, and recruits up to seven students per year to the program.
