             Job Title: Transmission Operations & Planning Technical Executive Location: EPRI Knoxville Office, Remote/Home Based Job Summary and Description: Key Responsibilities: + Lead and oversee research teams in transmission operations and planning, representing EPRI both internally and externally. + Tackle highly specialized technical challenges where cause-effect relationships are complex and precedent is limited, requiring innovative and imaginative problem-solving. + Serve as a recognized subject matter expert, actively collaborating with public and private organizations on cutting-edge research. + Maintain deep expertise through active engagement in state-of-the-art research and technology development. + Design and direct research studies that advance knowledge and innovation in the field. Additional Responsibilities: + Support EPRI’s Management & Technical Staff (M&TS), Senior Advisors (SAEs), and Sector Leadership in establishing and promoting EPRI’s technical leadership. + Contribute expertise across multiple projects and sectors to maximize impact and resource utilization. + Collaborate with EPRI leadership to shape strategic positions; consult with member organizations to guide their technical strategies. + Lead cross-sector teams and mentor junior and senior technical staff, with or without direct management responsibilities. + Provide coaching and technical guidance to internal staff in relevant areas of expertise. Qualifications: + Advanced degree in science or engineering required; PhD or equivalent experience strongly preferred. + 20+ years of experience in academia, industry, or research environments. Ideal Candidate Expertise: Transmission Modeling & Planning: + EMT modeling for inverter-based resources, HVDC, FACTS, large loads + Transmission power quality, reliability, and resilience assessments + AI applications in transmission planning Generation: + Impact studies and integration strategies for wind and solar PV systems + Steady-state and EMT modeling, inverter technologies, transient and harmonic analysis Distribution Systems: + Voltage regulation, CVR, smart inverter control + PV integration, EV impacts, energy storage, edge-of-grid technologies Transmission Systems: + Capacity and expansion planning, line/tower design + Series compensation, voltage stability, short-circuit analysis + Reactive power management, HVDC systems, converter technologies Power Quality – Harmonics: + Source identification, resonance analysis, filter design + Interharmonics, planning and allocation, industrial loads, inverter-based generation Power Quality – Transient Phenomena: + Time-domain modeling, fast transients in GIS + Lightning, switching, TRV, arresters, breakers, capacitors, cables, FACTS devices Microgrids: + Feasibility studies, system design, operational analysis + Islanded/grid-connected performance, military microgrids, blackstart restoration, electric ship systems Fault Location: + Impedance-, current-, and model-based fault location techniques + Incipient cable fault analysis, distributed generation/load impacts, earth current return Grid Resilience: + Multi-stage optimization for flood mitigation + Impact assessment, recovery planning, mobile energy storage deployment for blackstart Signal Processing, Machine Learning & Grid Analytics: + Voltage sag and transient direction algorithms + Autonomous event detection and root-cause analysis + Capacitor switching health, waveform characterization + Detection of anomalies from animal/tree contacts, lightning, fuse-recloser coordination + Relay performance analysis, misoperation detection, parameter estimation + AI/LLM-based chatbots for interpreting technical documents and measurement data The salary range for this position is $185,000 USD to $195,000 USD annually. This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location. This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s annual incentive program. The amount of incentive varies and is subject to the terms and conditions of the plan. This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s standard employee benefit programs, which currently include the following: medical, dental, vision, 401k, STD/LTD and paid family leave, life and accident insurance, paid time off (flexible vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay).
