    Job Description

    An employer in the Columbus, Ohio area is looking for an experienced Controls Engineer. This person will be working closely with our engineers, clients, account managers and suppliers to further advance our industry leading product line.

     

    The Control Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, detailing, and programming control systems for automated blast and paint booth installations, including integration of subsystems. This role involves creating detailed schematics, programming automation platforms, and ensuring compliance with NEC, NFPA, and applicable hazardous area standards.

     

    Systems typically combine proprietary equipment with customer-supplied and third-party components to deliver a comprehensive turnkey solution. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in PLC programming, HMI development, control system design, and safety compliance, as well as hands-on experience with commissioning and field support.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Develop PLC and HMI software primarily using Beckhoff, or Allen-Bradley platforms using structured text.

    • Develop HMI software using Ignition.

    • Develop control system architecture to meet customer specifications and applicable code requirements.

    • Prepare electrical and control schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts using AutoCAD.

    • Conduct short circuit rating analyses and ensure supplied equipment meets SCCR requirements.

    • Ensure all designs comply with NEC, NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NFPA 79, and other relevant safety standards, including those for hazardous (classified) areas.

    • Support factory acceptance testing, verification planning, and documentation.

    • Generate and maintain detailed Bill of Materials (BOMs) for all phases of design and procurement.

    • Provide support during system installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting at customer sites.

    • Interface with vendors, customers, and internal project teams to coordinate design deliverables.

    • Participate in continuous improvement efforts related to design standards, product development, and team workflows.

    • Contribute to root cause investigations and corrective action processes as required.

    Skills and Requirements

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from an ABET-accredited institution, or equivalent experience in related field.

    • Minimum of 2 years of experience in electrical and control system design for industrial equipment.

    • Minimum of 2 years of experience with PLC and HMI programming.

    • Strong understanding of 480VAC power system design and protection per the National Electrical Code (NEC).

    • Knowledge of OSHA and NFPA safety standards, including experience with hazardous area classifications.

    • Experience performing short circuit rating and coordination studies.

    • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical. • Willingness to travel occasionally to support commissioning and customer site work.

    • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required

    • Experience developing PLC software in Structured Text is preferred.
