The Center for European and Mediterranean Studies at New York University Arts and Science (CEMS/NYU) invites applicants for a Faculty Fellow position in the field of Mediterranean Studies. The initial appointment will be for one year beginning September 1, 2026, renewable annually for a maximum of three years, pending administrative and budgetary approval.
CEMS/NYU seeks a scholar with research and teaching interests in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean region. Research specialization should be in one or more of the following fields: comparative politics, anthropology, sociology, and/or modern history of Mediterranean Europe. We seek candidates with a specific focus on questions of migration, human rights, economic and social development, the environment/climate change, populism, and/or Mediterranean countries’ relationship with the European Union, and with strong experience in advising student research.
Responsibilities include teaching a total of three courses per year (graduate and/or undergraduate) - often including a graduate research methods seminar. Student advising is a key component of this position, as the faculty fellow will have a significant role in directing theses for master’s students and the possibility of advising undergraduate honors majors. Service to the program includes organizing events that feature the Mediterranean (seminars that bring in outside scholars, for instance) and can involve representing the Center at university occasions and committee meetings. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and excellence in teaching.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary for this position is $60,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
Candidates should have completed their Ph.D. no earlier than January 2021 and no later than August 1, 2026.
