    The NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights (https://bhr.stern.nyu.edu/about/) is seeking a Senior Research Scientist (Deputy Director) to advance the Center’s mission, which is to challenge and empower companies and future business leaders to make practical progress on human rights. The Senior Research Scientist (Deputy Director) will work in partnership with the Director to ensure that the Center’s research, teaching, and external engagements are aligned with its strategic goals and objectives. We are looking for someone who will take our fundraising to the next level, serve as a face of the center and be a natural connector for our program managers to companies, academic experts, government officials and donors. This role will also be responsible for guiding and enhancing our external communications.

     

    The Senior Research Scientist (Deputy Director) will work closely with the Research Director to ensure the continued strength of the Center’s research agenda, including the publication of in-depth reports and other written materials focused on how global businesses in different industries operate, assessing the human rights challenges they face, and proposing practical recommendations to companies and to governments. The Senior Research Scientist (Deputy Director) will also oversee the Center’s engagement and advocacy aimed at turning the Center’s findings and recommendations into concrete action.

    Responsibilities

    + Oversee the direction of the Center’s core research programs including Global Labor, Technology and Democracy, Values-Based Investing; make executive decisions about which projects are taken on by the Center and how resources are deployed.

    + Lead the planning and implementing the Center’s expanding fundraising strategy, with a focus on building and maintaining relationships with foundations and individual donors to facilitate the center’s growth and financial sustainability.

    + Oversee management of the Center’s external communications to ensure that its research and engagement efforts reach key audiences and align with its organizational priorities.

    + Partner with the Center’s Director of Operations to strengthen the Center’s administrative systems to support the Center’s program objectives and organizational growth.

    + Collaborate with the Center’s Research Director to develop and expand the Center’s Business Education program and global network initiatives.

    + Work with the NYU Stern School leadership and faculty to align the Center’s programs and resources with the school’s academic priorities and to ensure that the Center is a strong contributor to the school’s culture, priorities, and programming.

    + Represent the Center in its engagement with leading global companies, government entities, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and the media.

    Founded in March 2013, the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights is the first human rights center based at a business school. We take a pro-business, high standards approach. Our mission is to challenge and empower companies and future business leaders to make practical progress on human rights. Our current focus areas include values-based investing, technology and democracy, and global labor, as well as the integration of human rights into global business education.     Wage Transparency

     

    In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $100,000-$250,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

     

    Looking for a candidate with significant work experience, ideally on human rights or related issues within a company, government agency, advocacy organization, university, or think tank. The Senior Research Scientist (Deputy Director) should have a vision for the evolving field of business and human rights and the ability to translate this vision into practical action linking the Center’s research agenda to business, government and civil society.

     

    + An advanced academic degree (PhD, JD, MBA) is strongly preferred.

    + Strong management skills including experience guiding and mentoring staff and fostering strong working relationships.

    + Fundraising experience strongly desired, for example with non-profit organizations whose funding models include foundations and individual donors.

    + Experience in public engagement, with excellent writing and communications skills and the ability to represent the Center in public and private settings with an eye toward strengthening its visibility and influence.

    + Experience interacting in the business community or an understanding of how businesses operate. Familiarity with government and the current business and human rights landscape desired.
