    Facilities Regulated Materials (RMO) is responsible for testing and abatement of regulated materials for all University of Washington (UW) main campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors and grounds. **We have an outstanding opportunity for an Industrial Hygienist 2.**

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    Develop and implement asbestos sampling and inspection plans and procedures for complex or large inspections. Expand training curriculum.

     

    Perform good faith inspections for hazardous materials in preparation for remodeling, maintenance and/or emergency activities.

     

    Perform environmental assessments concerning hazardous materials including asbestos, lead, PCBs, heavy-metals, mold and water damaged materials.

     

    Expand training curriculum to include custom curriculum for internal and external clients involving a variety of health and safety topics including regulated building materials.

     

    Conduct in-house regulated building materials training as well as training for UW Tacoma, UW Bothell, Harborview, UW Medical Center and Friday Harbor Labs.

     

    Expand cross-training in the Regulated Materials Office in all areas of information management including the development of a “materials abated” database.

     

    Continue updates and development of all Hazard Review Checklist guidelines. Conduct routine compliance inspections.

     

    Collect, document and track Negative Exposure Assessments on a recurring basis for employees conducting <1% Asbestos removal practices.

     

    Collect bulk and surface samples of hazardous materials according to state, local and federal regulations or recommendations as necessary, i.e. determine what to sample, then according to AHERA certification protocols, do the sampling. Read/understand/interpret sampling results, using AHERA certification and technical experience; communicate results to affected parties.

     

    Interpret existing UW Facilities Hazardous Materials inspections for potential application to proposed project work.

     

    Interpret CAD or other computer program drawings for maintenance, construction, and operations personnel as needed to convey and illustrate information in an intelligible format. Review drawings and specifications with project managers and make changes and recommendations as needed.

     

    Research databases from previous inspections performed by multiple consultants for inclusion into database network for all buildings owned by the UW. Develop database system that is user-friendly and can be interpreted by a variety of UW personnel.

     

    Assess and verify the laboratory reports of hazardous materials samples to determine the accuracy and proficiency of the laboratory and analyst.

     

    Review consultant surveys and contractor & subcontractor submittals for Project Design Group.

     

    Develop and implement sampling and inspection plans and procedures for complex or large inspections.

     

    Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment needed for hazardous materials inspections.

     

    Manage design inspections in accordance with construction specifications, documents, and drawings as required.

     

    Develop and compose specification sections as required for advertised bid project work.

     

    Work closely with Facilities Construction project managers and shop supervisors.

     

    Support increased workload at UW Tacoma, UW Bothell, UWMC, Real Estate Office, Project Design Group, Information Technology and Friday Harbor Labs.

     

    Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status/work progress, needed materials and equipment.

     

    Operate machinery such as fork-lifts, scissor-lifts, and high rangers. Load and unload materials and supplies.

     

    Operate vehicles such as UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites.

     

    May instruct semiskilled workers.

     

    Communicate and collaborate with other Facilities shops to facilitate work.

     

    Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations specific to the work and conduct on the job, including Safety Data Sheet (SDS) instructions, Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

     

    Comply with all UW and Facilities policies and procedures, RMO protocols, i.e. Individual

     

    Accountability Protocols (IAP). Support all management directives and the vision and values of RMO.

     

    Participate in and follow through with RMO process improvement initiatives.

     

    Actively participate in meetings and training as scheduled.

     

    Provide excellent customer service through effective, courteous and professional interactions with clients, colleagues and the campus community.

     

    Operate vehicles such as UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites.

     

    Perform other duties as assigned.

    Skills, Experience and Knowledge** **:

    Requirements:

    A Bachelor’s Degree with major study in industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety, biological or physical science, or closely related field; and three years of professional experience in industrial hygiene programs. A Master’s Degree with major study in industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety, or closely related field may substitute for two years of the above professional work experience requirement.

     

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all the minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license / certification / registration.

    Additional Requirements:

    Certification as an AHERA Building Inspector and AHERA Asbestos Project Designer.

     

    Thorough understanding of State and Federal safety and environmental regulations governing asbestos, lead, and other environmental contaminants/hazards.

     

    Knowledge of asbestos sampling techniques; ability to read/interpret asbestos regulations; ability to communicate technical information to affected individuals.

     

    Demonstrated successful ability in taking direction, working well with others and as a member of a team.

    Desired:

    Five years of professional experience in industrial hygiene programs.

     

    NIOSH 582 certification to demonstrate knowledge/experience with microscopic analysis of asbestos air samples.

     

    Experience using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.

     

    OSHA compliance training as well as extensive training knowledge in all aspects of training curriculum development.

     

    Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) regulations.

     

    Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products

    Conditions of Employment:

    Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s License or a license recognized as valid by the State of Washington.

     

    May be required to accept variable work shift.

     

    Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions.

     

    Ability to lift and move heavy material may be required.

     

    Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.

     

    Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job.

     

    Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job.

     

    Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility, and the University of Washington Medical Center.

     

    Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.

     

    Regular and predictable attendance is required.

    $65,100.00 annual
