Job Summary The Sociology department is looking for an energetic program administrator committed to student-centered and experiential approaches to undergraduate learning with a taste for program development and innovative pedagogy. The candidate will advise students and student groups, provide individual and group coaching to program participants, lead workshops, actively participate in regular staff meetings and contribute to the articulation of program goals and directions. The candidate will also help shape and sustain a vibrant student community dedicated to social responsibility and social change. The SOUL Director is an active member of the Sociology staff team. They will partner with their colleagues in the undergraduate/curriculum area in order to coordinate each semester's SOUL time schedule, course guide, and course enrollment. They will actively collaborate with the department's Associate Chair and Director of Undergraduate Studies in order to assure that the program is closely articulated with the undergraduate program's goals. It is expected that the SOUL Director will collaborate with university colleagues (such as in the Barger Leadership Institute, Newnan Advising Center, Opportunity Hub, First-Gen Gateway, Comprehensive Studies Program, Poverty Solutions, Center for Social Solutions, Center for Global and Intercultural Study etc.) in order to ensure that the program is collaboratively situated within the larger university community and is meeting the University and College's policies and best practices. This is a 33% effort, 8-month appointment that pairs with a LEO Lecturer I position (teaching 2 courses/semester). Responsibilities* + 10% Program Admissions - the SOUL Director is responsible for admitting the students for each cohort. This process includes collaborating with the other Undergraduate Program staff to communicate with eligible students about the program, organizing information sessions, determining admissions, and communicating admissions decisions. + 40% Coordinate Research Opportunities for SOUL Students - collaborate with the faculty in the Sociology Department, Population Studies Center, and the Institute for Social Research in order to identify research opportunities for SOUL students. Work with the LSA Opportunity Hub and Barger Leadership Institute in order to identify potential funding, if the faculty do not have research funding available. + 30% Programming - The Director will develop extracurricular opportunities (e.g. guest speakers/lectures/workshops) for Sociology students each year (available to both SOUL students and general Majors) that explore relevant issues of class, education, and leadership. The Director will develop an end of the year event (e.g. graduation ceremony, SOUL reunion) for the students to cap off the end of the year. + 5% Collaborate with the Barger Leadership Institute and other key stakeholders - a major partner for the program is the Barger Leadership Institute, who provides leadership training, workshops, and opportunities for students in the SOUL program. SOUL students also may apply for funding for a capstone program through the BLI, the SOUL Director will assist the students with that process. + 10% Program evaluation - conducting regular "post-mortem" to assess academic success of students, student outcomes, site's perspective of relationship, identify opportunities for improvement. Develop a longitudinal study to assess program impact. + 5% Marketing - increase on-campus profile of the program, highlighting the opportunity, value, and benefit to students. Additional Information The salary range for this position at 33% is $22,836 to $28,645 (full-time rate of $69,200 to $86,526). This position has an unpaid summer seasonal leave from early May to late August. This position is interdependent with the posting for the LEO Lecturer I posting (job opening ID 270394). Candidates must apply to both job postings to be considered for both positions. Effort for the SOUL LEO Lecturer I appointment is anticipated to be 66% during the 8-month academic year. Union Affiliation The LEO Lecturer I position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
