    Course Description

    Course Title

COMPLIT 770 Interdisciplinary Approaches to Literature, "Data Practice in the Humanities: Theories, Workflows, and Criticisms"

    Course Description

This graduate seminar critically examines the evolving landscape of data practices in the humanities, focusing on the theoretical frameworks, methodological workflows, and ongoing criticisms and debates that shape the field. The seminar will be open to both graduate students in the humanities with no digital humanities background and to graduate students from technical fields who might be unfamiliar with qualitative humanistic research questions and particularities of working with humanistic data. The course is intended for a mixed audience and no prior computational experience will be required. Collaborative work between students from different backgrounds will be strongly encouraged to foster shared learning. Students will engage with advanced readings that interrogate the intersections of traditional humanities, digital theory, and computational methods. Particular emphasis will be placed on the affordances and limitations of the Digital Humanities, including critical questions of inclusion, exclusion, and bias in large-scale, multilingual, text-based datasets. Throughout the semester, students will analyze how data-driven approaches impact interpretive practices and ethical considerations in humanities research through weekly readings, evaluations of existing projects, and hands-on practical exercises introducing foundational concepts such as data collection, cleaning, and text analysis. The culminating final project may take the form of a seminar paper, a digital humanities experiment (e.g., data-driven analysis, interactive visualization, or critical tool development), or a project proposal that reflects the student's disciplinary background and research aims.

    Course Objectives

This seminar explores the many disciplinary fields with which literary studies are in dialogue as evidenced through shared investments in methods of textual interpretation and analysis.
