    Job Summary

    Repairs, maintains, constructs, installs, troubleshoots, and modifies electrical and data communication systems on City owned and leased facilities and assets. Installs and maintains street lighting systems. Repairs and maintains electrical components of HVAC systems.

     

    Works under the general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor or designee, arranging and performing routine assignments alone. Detailed instruction is frequently provided and work is frequently reviewed. Provides technical assistance, coordination and training to contractors and Trades Interns, as assigned.

    Representative Duties

    NOTE: (Duties may vary dependent upon assignment.)

     

    Troubleshoots and repairs faults in existing electrical systems.

     

    Remodels work areas to accommodate new tenants and/or electrical code requirements.

     

    Performs routine maintenance of emergency systems.

     

    Patrols City streets to monitor and maintain streetlights on a regular basis.

     

    Responds to emergency situations.

     

    Installs data communications cables.

     

    Performs maintenance and installation of specialized equipment at the airport, City ballfields and parks, and pier (waterfront), and on sewer pumping systems.

     

    Performs repairs and scheduled maintenance on electrical components of HVAC systems.

     

    Operates and maintains power tools and equipment.

     

    Operates a bucket truck to conduct maintenance and repair of City electrical infrastructure.

     

    Utilizes a Computerized Asset Management System to maintain logs and records.

     

    Enters street light repair data into a Computerized Asset Management System.

     

    Provides technical assistance and coordination to entry-level and temporary staff, as assigned.

     

    Follows applicable safety rules and regulations.

     

    Performs other duties, as assigned.

    Requirements

    Knowledge of:

    Electrical theory including Ohm's Law

     

    The use and interpretation of the National Electric Code codebook

     

    The use of electrical tools and materials

     

    Basic mathematics

     

    Principles and practices of training and coordinating the work of others

     

    Safe work practices and procedures

     

    Effective customer service techniques

    Ability to:

    Read and interpret the National Electrical Code codebook

     

    Troubleshoot electrical problems

     

    Train and coordinate staff

     

    Operate hand and power tools and equipment

     

    Estimate tools and materials required for various jobs

     

    Read blueprints and schematics

     

    Lift heavy objects

     

    Walk, stand and kneel for prolonged periods of time

     

    Write simple reports

     

    Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City

     

    employees and the general public.

     

    Provide effective customer service

     

    Work with persons from diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds as well as a variety of work styles, personalities, and approaches

    Skill in:

    Reading, writing, and communicating in English at an appropriate level

     

    Use of power tools and equipment

    REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education: Graduation from high school or the equivalent. Completion of an apprenticeship training program to obtain journey-level electrician status is desirable.

     

    Experience: Two years of recent, paid work experience performing journey-level electrical work which includes new construction, light industry, remodeling and troubleshooting.

    Licenses and Certificates:

    Possession of a valid Class C driver license.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Work is regularly performed indoors and outdoors in climatic weather conditions. High elevations, high voltages, explosives, noise, vibration, heat, chemicals, odors and dust are frequently encountered. Physical demands include pushing, pulling, bending, kneeling, working in cramped and awkward positions, climbing poles and carrying and lifting heavy objects. Responding to electrical emergencies and meeting deadlines is frequently encountered. May be required to be available for 24-hour standby duty and occasional evening hours, as assigned.

    If three or more qualified City employees apply and pass the examination, a promotional list will be established in addition to an open-competitive list. If fewer than three qualified City employees pass the examination, the appointing authority, in accordance with the City's civil service rules and regulations, can decline to use a promotional list, in which case a promotional list will not be established for this position.

    Background Investigation:

    Candidates who have successfully completed all prior phases of the selection process will be subject to a thorough background investigation.
