    Job Summary

    To provide emergency ambulance transport and basic life support (BLS) services during medical response calls for the City of Santa Monica.

     

    *Candidates selected for permanent Ambulance Operator positions will be appointed on a limited-term basis, allowing for up to three years of full-time employment. This term may be extended by up to two additional one-year periods, for a maximum total of five years. The eligibility list established through this recruitment process will be used to fill both permanent and as-needed Ambulance Operator vacancies that occur in the City during the life of the list.

    Representative Duties

    Drives and operates city owned ambulances and other department vehicles as directed, including driving to and from medical emergencies.

     

    Responds to emergency medical calls providing basic life support (BLS) services.

     

    Performs appropriate field procedures utilizing EMT-1 level skills, such as attaining and documenting vital signs, bandaging, splinting, lifting patients into ambulance.

     

    Assists Firefighter/Paramedics in providing emergency medical and health care, as directed.

     

    Maintains and inventories emergency ambulance supplies, equipment and routine vehicle parts.

     

    Supports patient billing operations. Maintains and updates records using an electronic patient care records system.

     

    Operates within federal, state, county and city laws and regulations and guidelines including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

     

    Attends and successfully completes department and hospital training sessions and drills.

     

    Operates advanced radios systems and other communications equipment.

     

    Participates in station and equipment clean-up.

     

    Performs other duties, as assigned.

    Requirements

    Knowledge of:

    Principles of emergency ambulance and transportation procedures including emergency medical practices and first aid

     

    Emergency vehicle maintenance and operation, including all applicable federal and state driving licenses

     

    Safe emergency work practices

     

    Infectious control procedures

     

    Emergency radio communication procedures

     

    Medical terminology and documentation

     

    English grammar and composition

     

    Effective customer service techniques

    Ability to:

    Safely and properly transport patients during ambulance transportation

     

    Read electronic and incident maps and follow map directions

     

    Work effectively in difficult and hazardous emergency situations and environments and carry out work assignments, as instructed

     

    Listen carefully to understand others

     

    Remain calm in emergencies

     

    Communicate effectively both orally and in writing

     

    Prepare records and reports

     

    Provide effective customer service

     

    Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public

     

    Work with persons from diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds as well as a variety of work styles, personalities, and approaches

    Skill in:

    Operating emergency medical vehicles and equipment

     

    Reading, writing, and communicating at an appropriate level

    REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Minimum of 18 years of age at the time of application.

    Education:

    Graduation from high school or the equivalent. Graduation from a Fire Academy or Fire Technology course work from an accredited college or university is desirable.

    Experience:

    Six months experience as an EMT on an ambulance is desirable.

    Licenses and Certificates:

    Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.

     

    Possession of a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate or the equivalent.

     

    Possession of a valid State of California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-1) Certification. A valid State of California Paramedic License may substitute for the EMT-1 Certification.

     

    Possession of a valid California Department of Motor Vehicles Ambulance Driver certificate.

    Selection Process:

    All applicants must submit clear, concise and complete information regarding your work history and qualifications for the position. All applications will be reviewed and only those applicants determined to be most qualified on the basis of experience, training and education, as submitted, will be invited to participate further in the selection process.

    Testing will consist of the following and is subject to change as needs dictate:

    Training & Experience Evaluation - 100%

     

    Department Interview

     

    In person Fire Department interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of December 8, 2025.

     

    Background Investigations

     

    Candidates who have successfully completed all prior phases of the selection process will be subject to a thorough background investigation

     

    Medical Examination

     

    Prior to appointment, candidates will be required to complete a thorough medical examination.

     

    Psychological Examination

     

    Prior to appointment, candidates may be evaluated for their suitability for employment.

    NOTE:

    If three or more qualified City employees apply and pass the examination, a promotional list will be established in addition to an open-competitive list. If fewer than three qualified City employees pass the examination, the appointing authority, in accordance with the City's civil service rules and regulations, can decline to use a promotional list, in which case a promotional list will not be established for this position.

     

    **Requests for fire station visits will not be accommodated during the recruitment process.
