Microsoft Tax & Customs Department is responsible for Worldwide Tax & Customs Reporting, Compliance, and Planning, including the technology and process & innovation functions to support the coordination of the worldwide tax and Customs functions.
There are four major functions within the Tax and Customs Department. 1) Tax Reporting and Transfer Pricing 2) Customs, Tax Process & Innovation, 3) Corporate Tax Planning & Controversies, Indirect Tax & Global Business Initiatives 4) Tax & Customs Controllership, Policy and Benefits Taxation.
Microsoft Tax & Customs is seeking a **Senior Indirect Tax Manager** to manage U.S. Sales & Use Tax compliance and planning for procurement activities. This role is critical in ensuring accurate tax determination, payment, and reporting while driving process improvements and leveraging technology to enhance efficiency
Responsibilities
+ **Tax Compliance & Planning**
+ Review purchases for taxability and ensure accurate sales tax payment and accrual of use tax.
+ Manage exemption certificate issuance and supplier communications.
+ Provide tax guidance to business groups on structuring contracts and purchase orders.
+ Research tax laws and new legislation and communicate impacts to stakeholders.
+ **Process & Technology**
+ Drive process improvements and collaborate with tax technology teams.
+ Implement automation and efficiencies using Microsoft Copilot and other tools.
+ Support tax product mapping and Vertex configuration.
+ Partner with Procurement and Engineering to enhance P2P processes.
+ **Reporting & Analysis**
+ Prepare tax reporting entries, journal entries, and reconciliations.
+ Analyze tax GL accounts and ensure data integrity.
+ Budgeting and variance analysis.
Qualifications
Minimum / Required Qualifications:
+ Advanced Degree (e.g., Master's in Business, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Taxation or related field; J.D.; LL.M. in Taxation) AND 5+ years tax compliance, tax accounting, tax audit management or tax advisory experience
+ OR Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Tax, Law, or related field AND 6+ years tax compliance, tax accounting, tax audit management or tax advisory experience
+ OR equivalent experience.
+ 4+ years of experience in Indirect Tax
Preferred Qualifications
+ Advanced Degree (e.g., Master's in Business, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Taxation or related field; J.D.; LL.M. in Taxation) AND 7+ years tax compliance, tax accounting, tax audit management or tax advisory experience
+ OR Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Tax, Law, or related field AND 8+ years tax compliance, tax accounting, tax audit management or tax advisory experience
+ OR equivalent experience.
+ Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Juris Doctor (JD), Master of Laws (LLM), or similar certification.
+ 6+ years of experience in Indirect Tax preferred
+ Demonstrated expertise in U.S. Sales & Use Tax; Washington State tax knowledge preferred.
+ Advanced Excel and Microsoft Office skills, including Copilot.
+ Experience with Vertex or equivalent tax engine software.
+ Deep analytical and communication skills.
+ Familiarity with Power BI, Alteryx, and Microsoft Fabric.
+ Proven ability to implement technology-driven solutions.
Tax IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $96,500 - $188,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $123,500 - $206,400 per year.
