    Since 1967, Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) has been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are DeafBlind or have a combined hearing and vision loss. We currently have an exciting full time career opportunity available to join the HKNC team as a full-time Assistant Coordinator of the Residence. This position is responsible for the efficient and compliant operation of the residential services program for HKNC. This is an in-person position based out of our residence facility in Sands Point, NY. Your regular schedule will be Tuesdays from 1pm-9pm, Wednesdays 12pm-8pm, and Thursday-Saturday 1pm-9pm. Due to the nature of the residential program, you may be required to work outside these hours to cover shifts or otherwise meet business needs.

     

    Pay Rate: $60-65k annually

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    + + Observe staff supporting consumers on trips to offer mentoring and coaching opportunities on best practices for communication, mobility and a person-centered approach.

    + Set up shifts with contact staff for consumers, as needed.

    + Ensure that the physical aspects of the residence building are accessible to all consumers by

    + Ordering needed equipment/supplies that makes these aspects accessible

    + Labeling signage in braille and in large bold print with color contrast

    + Ensure that braille labels are fresh and replace as needed

    + Ensure that all alerting equipment is in good working order and replace as needed

    + Ensure that all student use appliances are accessible

    + Maintain and order recreational supplies that are accessible for all (braille/large print UNO and SKIPBO, for example) and replace as needed.

    + Ordering supplies, decors, linens and furniture for residence facility.

    + Maintain monthly quality checks of all rooms and common areas of residence

    + Maintain consumers’ files.

    + Ensure Residence staff attend EPM’s.

    + Ensure coverage when staff are out

    + Ensure that all scheduled recreation activities are supported with sufficient staff/SSP support.

    + Assign specific consumers to each staff for them to follow/support and for them to report out on during EPMs and to communicate issues/concerns with Rehabilitation Counselors

    + Ensure that consumers are being supported in their training goals by:

    + Aligning some planned recreational activities with training goals

    + Encouraging and supporting consumers’ self-discovery and self-determination journeys

    + Promoting consumer centered approaches and culture in residence

    + Ensure consumers’ mail/packages are distributed

    + Maintain vehicle schedules, vehicle cleanliness, and gas receipts.

    + Set up weekly staff schedule.

    + Set up monthly recreation schedule.

    + Ensures completion of the student orientation program.

    + Interfaces with guardians, families, visitors and professional staff.

    + Set up Town Hall Committees

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Direct Reports include:

    Senior Habilitation Specialists, Habilitation Specialists, Recreation Specialist, Overnight Awakes and residence interns.

     

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

     

    + Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university in areas related/relevant to education or rehabilitation or recreation. Master preferred.

    + A minimum of three years of experience in Deaf, DeafBlind and blind education/rehabilitation/recreation field

    + Some supervisory experience preferred.

    + Knowledge of ASL preferred but must be willing to acquire conversational skills within one year.

    + Develop knowledge of grade 1 braille within I year.

    + Become certified in the food certificate program Serv Safe.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    CPR and First Aid certified shortly after hire.
