Lead Medical Lab Technician (MLT)
Job Summary:
The Lead Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is responsible for performing a full range of laboratory testing and providing physicians with quality results using a variety of clinical laboratory equipment. As a Lead Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) it is important to support the Technical Specialist in the performance of tasks that enhance the operations of the laboratory.
Essential Functions:
+ Performs the duties of a Medical Laboratory Technician
+ Assists Technicians with the implementation of new procedures and policies
+ Collaborates with the Technicians in coordinating the proficiency testing program to ensure that all testing is registered, analyzed, and reviewed to meet established deadlines
+ Recommends system changes to increase efficiency and accuracy of workflow and ensure daily operational efficiencies
+ Completes schedules of department and updates time/schedule as necessary for daily operations
+ Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position
+ Other duties as assigned
Education:
+ Must have **one** of the following:
+ Associates of Science in Medical Lab Technology
+ Completed 60 semester hours (including six hours of chemistry and six of biology) of academic credit from a college or university accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency and have successfully completed a medical lab technician program by a nationally accredited agency
+ Completed a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course within the past ten years
Certifications:
+ Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) or ASCP Certification required
Experience:
+ 4+ years of technical experience in a clinical laboratory setting (required)
+ 2 years leadership experience (preferred)
Skills & Abilities:
+ Ability to provide quality, error-free work in a fast-pasted environment
+ Engage with staff and patients in a professional manner

Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position
The Lead Medical Lab Scientist assists physicians and other specialists by performing all aspects of testing on blood, tissue, and other bodily fluids, the results of which can then be used to diagnose and treat patients. In addition, the Lead Medical Lab Scientist participates and assumes responsibility for the daily operations of their section and laboratory.
Essential Job Functions
• Reports quality patient results in a timely manner from section of responsibility.
• Responsible for achieving desired fiscal performance.
• Stays current in laboratory theory and techniques.
• Maintains regulatory compliance of their lab section.
• Responsible for quality control, proficiency testing, instrument maintenance, staff competency.
• Prepares section schedules.
• Provides recommendations for process improvement.
• Oversees training and orientation of personnel.
• Performs routine, moderate, and highly complex laboratory diagnostic tests.
• Confirms test results and provides the physician with data necessary to determine the presence, extent, cause, and treatment of disease.
• Follows quality control programs, assuring the accuracy and reliability of test results.
• Monitors, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instruments and equipment.
• Assists with training of new employees and students in the use of lab equipment and testing procedures.
• Performs computer function on both Lab Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS).
• Participates in continuing education in respective areas of expertise.
• Performs, records, and evaluates Quality Control
• Assists with inventory control and maintaining supply levels for the department.
• Maintains compliance of their section with all appropriate agencies (CAP, TJC, OSHA, CLIA.)
• Completes schedules for department and updates time/schedule as necessary for daily operations.
• Responsible for achieving desired fiscal performance.
• Submits and reviews The College of American Pathologists (CAP) proficiency testing.
• Assumes manager's duties and responsibilities in their absence.

Licensing/Certification
For BSMH, MLS Medical Lab Scientist Certification or eligible by a nationally recognized certification agency (preferably ASCP) (required)
For RSFH (as of 3/27/25) if registry-eligible, must achieve certification within 12 months from hire date.

Bachelors, Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Laboratory Science/Biomedical Science/Biology/Biochemistry
through a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved program (required)
