Position Summary
The Blending Manager oversees MPC's end-to-end commercial blending operations, responsible for optimizing blend pool economics across distillates and light ends. This role ensures product quality compliance, maximizes value from regrade and swap opportunities, and integrates physical blending strategies with commercial and regulatory requirements. The position delivers ex-refinery merchant blending strategies that involves coordination across trading teams, Fuels Value Chains (FVC’s), Value Chain Optimization (VCO) and refining. The Head of Blending has four core objectives:
+ Lead blend optimization strategies across product pools for the trading teams
+ Govern product specifications and blending compliance
+ Manage blend infrastructure constraints and tankage allocation
+ Interface with trading and scheduling to execute high-value blend strategies
Key Responsibilities
+ Develops and executes blend optimization strategies across gasoline, naphtha, diesel, jet, renewables, and gasoline components to maximize margin and trading exposure. Reporting of strategy and PnL to commercial leadership.
+ Ensures all blends meet federal and regional specifications (e.g., RVP, cetane, sulfur, biofuel mandates) and manages off-spec remediation.
+ Coordinates and owns blend operations across third-party tankage and collaborates on terminal and refinery blending, addressing bottlenecks and proposing improvements. Evaluate additional third-party tank positions for blending and focus on optimization of existing positions.
+ Aligns blending strategies with trading desks, analytics, and refining teams to support economic forecasts and market signals.
+ Maintains executable blend recipes and models incorporating cost, spec, and infrastructure data; ensures physical readiness with Scheduling and Terminals.
+ Embeds QA/QC standards, monitors blend-related exposures, and ensures compliance with environmental and tax credit programs.
+ ·Builds and mentors a high-performing blending team focused on execution, optimization, and quality assurance.
+ Engages domestic and international traders, along with refining, FVCs and VCO to ensure a unified approach Identifies and executes regrade and swap opportunities to enhance blend pool economics and trading outcomes.
+ Leads development of blending models and dashboards, applying digital tools to support signal-driven decisions and KPI tracking
Education and Experience
+ Bachelor’s Degree required
+ Eight (8) years of experience in blending operations, terminal management, or product logistics
